Check engine light questions....
I've searched this forum for my answer n I didn't find it...
I had codes 71 n 73. I looked up on here to see what I needed to do to fix it.. So, I cleaned the EGR ports. Which cyl. 1 & 3 were plugged up.. I reset the ecu n had no more CEL. YAY! But wait the next day I got a CEL code 72. I re-cleaned the EGR ports makin them "nice n shiny" this time n got new spark plugs.. Reset the ecu.
Now 10 days later my CEL comes back on n its code 72.. WTF! I drive the car home 2 n half hrs turn it off for like 45 mins. Go out to the car to go to the store. The CEL is still on of course since I haven't done anything to it yet.. But then a min. later the CEL turns off!?!
Would the CEL just go out like that without me fixin the code 72?
Thanx

If a problem is not found after a certain amount of time or drive cycles the check engine light will turn itself off.
Regarding the misfire, is it an obvious misfire? Is it severe enough that you can feel the engine missing? Or, is your only indication of a miss that the DTC is present?

When the CEL is "on" I can tell theres a problem. It stumbles alil n has a lose of power. But ever since the CEL went away the car is back to normal... Wierd!

When the CEL goes out that means that the problem is ether intermittent and/or it no longer exists and it's good for now! If it comes back on for a while then shuts off again, it's an intermittent issue. That it's usually an indication that a sensor could be dirty, starting to fail or the wiring is bad/corroded or it has a loose connection.

Dude OBD2 has been out for 15 years. Spend 50 bucks and buy a code reader already, sheesh.....
I agree with the above recomendation to buy an OBD2 reader. They are less than 100 bucks now and are worth every penny.
But if it was an SRS code wouldn't it be coming from the SRS light or at least the SRS light on the dash would be on wouldn't it? There is a difference between the CEL and the SRS lights.
OP, what indicator are you getting your codes from, the SRS indicator or the check engine indicator? Oh and if it was an automatic transmission or TCU code it would be the flashing D4 light that you would get those codes from. So if he is reading the CEL they are DTC's. Why waste $50-$100 when the 96 Accord will tell you everything for free? I have an OBD2 reader, however it was only a $20 cable for my Palm handheld.

Because there are no such codes as 71,72, and 73 related to misfires. Not in any way, shape, or form. A code reader is accurate and can provide much more info than simply shorting the connector and getting the CEL to blink. Why bother with that outdated technique when you dont have to?? Even DIY'ers should have more sense than that. Like I said OBD2 is 15 years old already....
Are you a Honda tech by any chance?
It's odd that I have an OBD2 list of Honda DTC's that also lists the corresponding self diagnostic MIL codes. They all include the 71-74 (75-76 is for V6 engines) misfire codes. That's in a 1996 Honda Helms manual.

Whatever, I'm done here!
Edit,
Had to post this. Highlighted the MIL coeds so they are more visible.... kind of a poor scan quality of the 97-01 Helms Honda Prelude shop manual

Clogged egr ports will not set misfire codes. If the only code that resets is 72 (#2 cyl misfire) you need to isolate fuel, ignition, or mechanical problem. First, it is curious that codes 71, & 73 were fixed by cleaning egr ports. Try swapping spark plugs. Swap cyl 2 plug w/ cyl 3. If it sets a code 73, its the plug. Are the cap, rotor, wires and plugs new? How many miles are on this engine?
My SRS light isn't on. It does come on right before I start my car, then goes out with the rest of the lights.. I'm readin' the blinks from the "check engine light".
I have a 97 integra gsr and my check engine light came on any ideas I stopped and put a qrt of oil in but the car runs fine no over heating no knocking nothing I'm thinking maybe clean the spark plugs and reset the Cel how do I reset the Cel??
