Cruise Control in European EM2
Hey everyone, I am a proud EM2 driver from Scotland. Trouble is am absolutely baffled as to why there is no cruise control in my car (or any UK EM2) especially as it was standard (I am sure) on the NA car.
Also looking at this page you can see that the item laballed "2" is of course the unit for controlling cruise control. However, looking at the list underneath you can also see that you cannot purchase this item...
How would I be able to check to see if the wiring is in place for cruise control or something.
I would love help on this issue as it's a total nightmare on the motorways without it.

Interesting thread, I was unaware that cruise control was not offered in UKDM models and I'm surprised it's not considering that market has a lot of nice features not available NA.
To determine if the wiring is in place you would need to check a UKDM wiring manual, but I doubt it's is.. Adding it would be a nightmare, cruise control is tied into numerous different parts of the car.

Your telling me!
A good example of the spec difference is my old 98 Accord Coupe, in which there was no options at all besides the body kit and spoiler, apart from that all the extra's were in the car as standard.
Looking at the USDM of the car, I can see that velour seats etc. were all subject in basic models, as wheel as trim levels unlike our motors.
Anyway back to this situation, and I have no idea how I am going to get ahold of that sort of information, the EM2 is already practically non existent over here.
On another note, there are companies that do aftermarket cruise control installations and claim they can actually route it through OEM switchgear if it was just an option that wasn't originally ticked. The price is a cool 500 quid though, or 800 dollars (approx.). Ouch.
Any other suggestions would be welcome. And saying that, I have seen a German EM2 on here with the cruise control stuff on the wheel...

Did you receive the Sedan options in your market? Did they have cruise control in them? If so, you'll need (at the very least) the following:
Steering wheel clock spring
Cruise control module (under hood)
Cruise control wire harness
Cruise control buttons (can either wire your own in, or just take the steering wheel itself (no need for an airbag, as you can re-use your existing one).

For whatever reason Honda didn't put cruise in Civics anywhere but north america until fairly recently (if they've even started doing it yet) I know Deschlong has sold retrofit kits in the past for 5th and 6th gen civic owners in Europe who wanted cruise, you might want to PM him about it.
toyomatt84 We only got the Civic IMA saloon in our market at around the time of the Civic Coupé, and of the 10 or so that are available in the entire country (another scarce car), there are none with cruise control...despite all being specced highly with leather seats etc.

EDIT: @ the OP- You can search craigslist pretty much worldwide here: http://www.allofcraigs.com/ Maybe you'll get lucky and somebody will ship.
What sort of things should I be searching for on Craigslist. I am not really familiar with it as it's not a big deal over here at all.
Also what parts do I need here, I am a n00b
From the sounds of it I will definitely need to get hold of a Helm's manual which ain't cheap to start off with, and no idea how I will get it over sent over here.
Any more help would be welcomed as I would love this to be my first little project as you were involving looking at stuff under the bonnet. Doesn't sound easy but with you guys help it should be achievable.

Bearing in mind the wiring colors may not be the same from USDM to EDM, you should be able to find somebody on eBay that will ship a manual to you.
Also, it looks like eBay has all the parts you need for less than $60 a piece. Go to eBay motors; parts and accessories and search "cruise" under Honda Civic 2001-2005. Depending on which system/engine you have (you should be able to figure that out with the service manual) you would need: Cruise switch (above left pocket), steering wheel switches, cruise cable, and actuator assembly (2-dr D17A1 and D17A2)or actuator assembly and CC module (all the rest). I have the system with no CC module under the dash so, I don't know if it has it's own harness. I would suspect that you are going to have to wire it yourself instead of finding a harness, make sure to get each part with the connectors. It will likely be cheapest to find one person who can obtain all of the items for you in one fell swoop. Save on shipping, and get a discount for multiple parts.
Anyway, here's your first reading assignment (attached).

Hi guys and thanks for yet more help!
I have just checked my EDM EM2 and above the right pocket (Right hand drive) there is, from left to right, the mirror controls, the sunroof controls and then the headlight adjustment roller in place of where the cruise button should be. This is also in addition to the sunroof and mirror controls being in opposite position. I have attached a short clip to show this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6jJxSKiZ-0
The problem now lies with the UK MOT test and whether or not having an adjustment switch is required to pass an MOT. If so then I can no have Cruise Control in the car unless I find out some way to always have CC activated without needing the switch...if that makes sense. Will need to check this.
As for the actuator assembly I am pretty sure my engine number is ending in A9. Will double check the paperwork later.

You can have it wired with Cruise always ON, but I really don't recommend it - IMO, it's a safety thing. You have another option, and that is to relocate the headlight adjuster to another switch location. If I'm not mistaken, you have some knockout/delete plates that are horizontally aligned at the front of the centre console (I do know something about the EM2!). These fit heated seat switches in some markets (including Canadian Acura 1.7ELs). This is a standard size switch plate common to about a zillion Hondas. You should be able to find a horizontal-mounted headlight adjuster that fits is. I believe the 5-dr 95-01 EDM Civics had this.
I checked the dash, not one 'dummy' button in sight. I am wondering what would happen to the headlights if the switch were disconnected. Would they go to a default position as a failsafe or just stay were they last were. if the latter, then that would be fine as I don't intend to tow anything with the car.
also, if this is where the adjuster is in my car, where is it or is it even there at all in the USDM cars.
as ever, further help and discussion appreciated.

Pretty sure they stay at whatever position they were last at, you could just stick the switch up inside the dash as well.
USDM cars didn't get power adjust headlights, only European models. I have seen them before and personally put a set in a '92 Civic over here that were sourced from Holland (had to build a harness for the power adjust feature) Btw, what exactly is the point of the power adjust feature? We set ours here with a screwdriver or wrench to be at a certain height while parked 25' away from a wall on level ground (can't remember the height anymore) and just leave them there. They only get adjusted if you need to remove the headlight for some reason.

They are used to compensate for load due to goods in the trunk or from passengers. You can always maintain correct headlight aim AND not blind oncoming drivers. Quite clever, in fact.
Also depends if your suspension type is hard or soft. It's been a requirement for vehicles sold in Germany since Jan 1, 1990 - they of course have some of the strictest vehicle safety/inspection laws in the world, in addition to having superior ECE regulations on vehicle conspicuity and better headlight/road illumination than current US FMVSS and CMVSS. (Incidentally, it is illegal in the US to have ECE but non-DOT-approved headlights. Canada at least permits the use of ECE headlights on our roads, even though our CMVSS regulations closely mirror to US FMVSS.) Makes sense to me, then, that they would have rules that ensure your headlights can be levelled from inside the car to compensate for load. In practice, though, I'm sure it's not an often-used feature ... kinda like how EDM rear fogs aren't used, even when it's foggy.
As for the "hassle" of retrofitting CC, I think this is also up to individual interpretation, too. I retrofit it in my 94 Civic - but then I have some nerve/circulation problems in my lower body which makes constantly pressing the gas pedal on long trips very uncomfortable. And I tend to take a lot of them. So, that was my impetus.

Not as far as I know - it is more of a workplace injury. However, diabetes does run in my family -- mostly due to diet, though, which shouldn't be a problem for me.
If you want a road rage ticket go right ahead. I speak from experience. Watched a friend blind a guy with his and get a road rage ticket. Cop said it would be assault with a deadly weapon if there had been an accident. This is in TX, other states/countries may vary.
OP: This is what I meant - switch locations in the centre console, where the (upside down) fog switch is. What do you have here? I believe this is from an 01-05 Civic.
It Wasn't Me Yes! It is worth cruise control to me as the main part of my driving is on the motorway, and unlike American (from what I seen in Florida) motorways, this one is constantly changing gradient and it's just annoying having to regulate my speed when I know I could press a button and relax and enjoy the ride.
deschlong I have attached another short clip, please excuse the quality as it was 2am here.

Just to clarify though there is simply a bin and above that a lighter/ashtray area.
The best thing to do would just to be get rid of the headlight adjuster. I never intend to take a load heavy enough to require it and even if I did it would not be a night.
