Default Fast Oil Burning

Alright ive had this problem since i got the car. I checked the compression and found an average of 190 psi in all four cylinders. Its also running steady with 21 Hg/in. in vacuum as my vacuum gauge indicates. I Teflon sealed a big notice of oil leak upon load, which was the oil sending unit threads. So there is no other indicators of bad valves or piston rings that can show im burning oil or leaking any. Although im pretty sure the pcv valve is loose and/or bad because i can smell it on hard accelerating, and my friend said oil can recirculate in the pcv system and burn it through the intake. idk if thats true but if any of you guys know what the problem is or have this problem any input is good.

My H22 never burned much oil.

How much are you burning? Qt every oil change? 1/2 qt?

How many miles on the motor? Have you done a valve lash adjustment?

@Jake93-Yeah i started thinking it was just preludes its good to know that there are ones out there ha. Oh and its a 1997 base 5th gen with a h22a4 if its not the same as yours.

@typemismatch- Im burning about almost the whole thing: 4 qts for putting in 5qts. its always at the very tip of the dipstick after a 3000 mile oil change. Its also below the low hole on the stick and its been around 500 miles since my last change. Its about to hit the 165k mark and yes i did a valve adjustment about 6 months ago but still burned the same amount since i had the car.

Usually burning oil is either rings or valve seals.

The other place oil goes is through the valve cover vent to the intake.

I would bet most of the problem is coming from the oil rings. I believe the FRM cylinder walls were designed to be lower friction compared to iron sleeves and after 100k+ miles of operation the oil rings are not sealing as well as they did originally....thus leading to many higher mileage h-series motors burning oil.

Mines usually leaked at Cam Seal. Aftermarket did the trick, but it was no where near two quartz every 3k miles.

if i VTEC continuosly for 300km,my engine oil (10w30 semi syn) reduce from 3quarters down to below the min level....and i got no oil leak anywhere.....experience told me it will be worse if fully synthetic oil were used....

It is not uncommon for a H22 to burn a quart every 1000 miles. Carnot is right about the FRM cylinder walls, that has a lot to do with burning oil. Also hitting vtec all the time doesn't seem to help much either.

Do any of you run oil catch cans? Is it possible that its burning oil by blowing through the PCV or intake breather?

I know a quart would be a crazy amount of oil to blow through your intake breather, but its just an idea.

If you were getting that much oil consumption through the PCV system I think you would notice a considerable power problem from the lack of compression in the motor. I run an oil catch can but my car has a turbo and built bottom end. I have zero oil consumption and the only thing that accumulates in the catch can is a small amount of foamy/goopy mixture of condensed water vapor and probably a small amount of combustion products.

Did you eliminate your pcv for your catch can set up?

Yes, the crankcase ventilation is accomplished by 2 lines off the valve cover to a catch can with a breather filter.

My brothers H22A4 burns a good amount as well. I've read they burn straight from the factory.

Pull the PCV valve off, shake it and see if you can hear it moving up and down, if not then it's stuck open and you can burn quite a bit of oil that way. You also don't wanna be like most people and render your PCV system worthless by pulling the hose that goes from the intake pipe to the valve cover since it's there to supply fresh air into the valve cover.

The whole synthetic oil causing more oil burning/leaking is a dumb myth. I use full synthetic Mobil 1 and I don't burn a drop of oil, every 5k when I change it the oil is always at the top dot.

I run 10w40 but I know my motor needs help but I have a fully built motor to go back in... The thicker oil helps control the oil burn

a pcv valve is like 3 dollars. get one of those just because. otherwise, like others have stated, if it wasn't maintained/has been ragged on, its probably rings.

yeah my pcv valve was a culprit too. i diagnosed it and it works but i dont know if any of yours are loose like mine or its supposed to be but it looks like it can pop out when i wiggle it. most likely the oil burning smell when i load it in 5th gear.
