I found a gsr hydro trans on craigslist for 250, I got him down to 200. He has no idea how many miles are on it or anything, doesn't even know if its LSD. He bought it and never used it he says. It's just the gears and trans case, nothing else.

First, is this a good deal?
Second, how do I know if its LSD

Its a GREAT deal IF the tranny is actually good... which i highly doubt it is, for that price.

You'll never know if it has an aftermarket LSD unless you actually take it apart. No USDM GSR tranny came with a factory LSD. Some JDM GSR's did however... should have a stamp on the casting... something like Y-LSD, or just LSD.

Someone correct me if im wrong...

 

Thanks for the reply dude, I think I may pick it up either way though. I just bought a b18b for 200$ too lol, engine head intake mani and exhaust mani. Not a bad deal I dont think. I need a trans, and I'm having a hard time finding ANY b series trans around here.

I'll have to find out if there's a visible stamp on it

 

Yeah B-series trannys have become harder and harder to come by... and more and more expensive. Good luck

Look through the diff where the axles go in, if you can see straight through it's a got an LSD, if you see a bar it's an open diff.

 

Some Usdm gsr tranny and usdm so trannys have lsd diff , everyone that I have owned has anyways it'll be a s or y80 and yes if it's if its hollow it's lsd if there is a bar it's open like the other fella said , also the gsr lsd is the best diff it's stronger than the si/siR diff , also the b16b type R tranny came with a helical lsd out of all the lsds the b16b type R is the best , as for gears that depends on what motor your running

It's not a LSD transmission just because it leaves two black marks... you are driving perfectly straight. Turn the steering wheel 90' and try it again and see how many black marks you make then. The sure way to know if to pop the passenger side axle out and see if there is a 1/2" diameter bar running across the middle of the opening... if you see it, NO LSD. If it is open and you can see the center of the end of the mid-shaft... it IS an LSD transmission.
