i just finished building a gsr for a buddy.
its got stage 3 skunk2 package(cams/springs/valves). stock bottom.

i finally got it running right after the map sensor was bad and now it runs good with no cel.
the engine idles very low and no low end power which i think is normal with the headwork.

it pulls hard up until 5k then it bogs a bit then slowly pulls hard again. we did like 3 pulls to see how it did untuned.

my question is would the bog be caused by the tune or something mechanical/electrical. like the distributor. running the factory gsr ecu.
timing is set correctly.

does anyone have a quick basemap for this i can slap on till it gets tuned. it will be a long time till it gets tuned

i have a hondata s300 from my turbo car that i can slap in their for now since the turbo motor is being built

 

Ugh how smart are you to stomp on a car that is untuned..? How does the stock gsr ecu know that u added s2s3 cams and i/h/e.? Get that **** tuned ASAP and stop beating on it.
Also tell your buddy to invest in a wide band sensor as well so he will know what AFRs the engine is running at.

I would suggest 370cc+ injectors as well

 

i would also suggest smaller cams, stock gsr bottom end dosent have enough compression for stage 2 let alone stage 3

 

Nice combo, I had a B18C stock bottom end in my GS-R and the top end was Skunk 2 valvetrain and Buddy club Stage 4's. Did have the Skunk 2 manifold as well but running stock TB. JDM ITR header and 2.5" exhaust and it dyno'd @ 200 whp. When my cat was clogged, it was doing what you're describing almost to a T. After making a testpipe, it free'd up almost 30hp in the middle for VTEC engagement and pulled a LOT faster up top.

 

What is going on with this set-up? Factory ECU on Skunk2 Stage 3 cam really? Surprised you didn't have more problems.
Stock GSR head vs semi built not sure what this means but if it hasn’t been opened up it will be a huge flow restriction, you might end up about 215-225whp.
Stock block at 10:1, not ideal for these cams at all, I’d be surprised if gets over 200whp with this compression.
240cc injectors way to small.
Get that S300 now.

 

I missed the whole line about the factory ECU. I skimmed and saw the hondata toward the bottom. I was on a P28 so I'd say you may have other issues.

 

Stock ECU is not gonna work well with a cammed and built head...
Id put that s300 on there ASAP before something gets damaged...

Our cars require tuning.. this isn't a ls1 with a cam and no tune that you can roll around on...

 

ya, stage 2s are too large for the compression. Idk why in your right mind you would try to put a ported head with cams and such and expect the factory ecu to control those type of mods. And then you romp on it with no tune at all, if you keep that up you mine as well expect problems.

Get a real tune and spend money on something that actually matters

What cam do you guys recommend? I have a similar setup in my garage. It's my buddy's stock head and block GS-R. Only thing done are Eibach valvetrain and a Skunk 2 manifold. I/H/E. Skunk Stage 1s, Pro 1s?

 

bc3+ are nice in a stock compression gsr

 

we have a wideband on the car. i had it on my car but after i swapped it in its not reading right on his gauge for some reason. it was reading pretty rich
i was trying to read plugs but they are done so were going to swap spark plugs in. and i will do a couple runs while looking at the wideband through my laptop with the s300 hooked up.

i just want to drive it for a month or so so we dont take it to get it tuned and next day something else is wrong. i want it to be settled in before we take it to get it tuned. valve clearence and all that stuff has to be double checked after the valves and stuff settle in imo.
plus he may want to some other mods like intake manifold, header and small stuff before getting it tuned

we wont do high compression since 160-170whp is enough for the little car.

 

this is what i told him. just run itr internals and get the head ported/polished.

 

Those cams are fine.. infact, they are probably one of the better choices for this type of setup.

"mild" 1.8 with s2s2's and pro2's comparison. Its not always the size of the cam that counts, but if you have a good efficient motor, then the bigger cam will always edge out.

Its the tune basically, Get it tuned properly by someone who knows what they are doing and you should be fairly happy with the outcome.

 

Won't run right on a stock ecu because it doesn't know how to run on a semi built motor
