Default New headunit and speakers - everything is fuzzy (but only somtimes) Any ideas?

I just installed a Kenwood headunit and two 6.5" Polk coaxial speakers into my EG hatch a few days ago. I soldered everything and wrapped it all in electrical tape so it's all good to go. I have it hooked up to my iPod and it sounds really good, most of the time...

...sometimes when I turn the car on, and the music resumes from where it was last playing, it sounds SUPER fuzzy and distorted almost. I disconnect my iPod and reconnect it and everything goes back to normal, the speakers sound perfect. Could this be a dysfunctional headunit, speakers, or iPod? Any ideas?

Is this one of those head units that has a USB slot so you can plug your ipod in? Kinda sounds like the head unit is just not syncing correctly with the ipod, if removing and replacing the cable fixes it.

Could be just a poorly designed head unit. Have you searched the web to see if any others have the same issue with that model?
