Default 1991 Civic Si Restoration - Squirt

Bought a 1991 Civic Si this weekend for $900. It's the 2nd owner (who owned it for a year after the first owner, who I work with, sold it to her) I bought it from and it was a family car since new. 100% stock but all the maintenance was done on time, including oil changes, since new. It has on small dent, very few door dings, two small spots of rust, and all but one door still has the original paint. It has 220k miles on it right now.

Plans include fixing the sunroof leak, installing a better stereo, dumping it on koni sports/GCs, mesh or retro looking wheels, replace all the hoses in the engine bay along with any neglected maintenance I find, repaint the car, replace the faded carpet and mats, and eventually (couple years or when a deal comes around) swap in a b16a. For now it will function as my daily beater to keep some miles off of my 2004 TL, and to save some gas!

Pictures when I bought it:

Just to restore it, lower it, then swap in a b16a...or something similar. But I plan on driving it a couple years as-is. 4 cylinder plus air con that works is something I can't complain about...well for $900 that is.

Thanks! This is my third teal honda that i've owned so far!

After talking to the previous owner she said it has the original clutch still (220k mi) on it and the original water pump but thankfully its on its third timing belt.

Haven't had time to work on the car much... but I have put almost 200 miles on it this week already!

Updates on page 2

Update:

Found out that it needs a radiator (leaking at the top tank seal) so I placed a order with Honda for about $120 of hoses and with Autozone for a new rad and thermostat. Attempted to change the spark plugs but saw a lot of oil in the tubes so I ordered a VC gasket set. Checked the suspension and brakes which are all in great shape thankfully!

The only work I've done to it so far is to paint all of the faded parts and the wheels/hub caps. Made it look a lot better so far! I still need to compound and wax the paint and touch-up the clear coat on the one side.

Parts on order include:
New rad.
Coolant hoses (all)
Shifter bushings
Front motor mount insert (the only cracked mount)
Honda emblem for the front

No idea...

I still plan to buy it back in a few years. I actually sold it to a good friend who I knew would love it as well. Too bad I went to a 21 mpg TL. This car averaged 35 MPG for the first two tanks but I still plan to replace the spark plugs, seafoam the engine, replace the air filter, check inside the distributor, and get the injectors cleaned (221k miles on them), so hopefully it goes up after all of that!

There's a big Honda meet in Richmond, VA next weekend so I hope to get all of the trim repainted by then and the front "H" emblem installed, which will come in on Tuesday from Honda (crazy it was $20 but I figure it's worth it since I'll look at it a lot).

For Tuesday night I hope to get the radiator installed along with all of the coolant hoses, and the thermostat. I'll probably then be inspired to clean the engine bay a bit since I can't stand the smell of burning coolant that will have spilled everywhere.

In the next couple weeks I'd like to install the VC and oil pan gaskets, paint the VC, install new spark plugs, and change the oils. At that point, the car should be done mechanically at least for it's current d16a6 motor, then to move onto the paint. I'm thinking of getting it ready for a repaint in August... but I haven't totally decided on that yet, I may just refresh the current paint and touch-up the chipping clear coat and drive it like that for another year.

I was planning on heading to Richmond on Sunday, I'm actually located in Fredericksburg. Do you have info on the Fredericksburg meet?

Haha wow. I figured I would be driving to Richmond Saturday but I'm fine with not doing that. The place is right next to an Indian restaurant which I frequent...I actually know exactly where it is. Thanks for the info!

I actually painted the steelies black, then resprayed the hubcaps silver (since they were painted blue by the previous owner - kinda hard to tell in the pic since the car was wet) and at the same time removed the overspray from the tires.

The tires that came with the car are quiet and with just a couple thousand miles on them, so once they start to get worn out then I'll find some old-school looking wheels, till then, the hubcaps and steelies will stay.

As of now I put about 400 miles on the car a week and miles on free tires is a lot more pleasant than miles on the $600+ set of tires on my TL.
