Looking for opinions here..On what the pros and cons of emission controls removal.

I am rebuilding an all original 83 Civic 1300 (in the family since new).

The engine needs a overhaul and so I am removing the millions of vacuum lines on the engine in order to get the engine out.

I am now wondering what is actually needed and what can be eliminated on the vacuum switches, solenoids, etc.

I do not want to do anything that is not reversable as this car is too cherry to butcher up.

BTW, the car is exempt from emissions testing here in Texas because of it's age.

 

Well since you dont have to worry about emissions there, then id take out the old carb setup an swap it for a weber carb. Those will not only clean up alot of that vacuum line mess, but also give the car a tad more power.

 

Now that car is a little out of my range of expertise, but certain system could be removed with very little consequence. But for the sake of restoration, why not reuse those systems?

A lot of them may have to do with driveability, especially when cold or if it has A/C and power steering, or vacuum advance on the distributor. You may run into problems getting it to run well using the factory carb.

 

@slowcivic2K: That is the main issue with removing anything. If not done correctly it will severely effect driveability.

I would actually like to leave it all in place, but some of the control solenoids are not working right and finding spares is a major problem. Removing one subsystem can effect other subsystems. I feel like shooting myself after studying the schematic for this vacuum lines .

This must have been the height of the vacuum system nightmare for the auto industry.

@Antiherp12, if i could find a Weber system I would definetely consider it, but I hear those can be a nightmare to tune of you don;t know what you are doing (like me!)

No prob. But idk how much horsepower it'll increase. Cause i havent had a chance to buy once for my car due to unemployment.
