Default Replace window regulator or motor?

My drivers side window won't roll up or down anymore. I've checked and I can replace the regulator or the motor, and the motor is a lot more expensive. Anyone have any experience with which one usually goes out?

Run power and ground wires directly from the battery to the motor. Does the motor run?
