Default today was fun... not

little story for anyone that cares, I jump in my Type R, and meet up with a couple other guys, one in a SC'd RSX, the other in a Turbo MR2. we decide to go to a car meet in the next city, all is well. get out on the highway, open it up a little, no VTEC, just a nice pace. reving about 5000 rpm's and the B18C5 decides that it's time to spin a bearing, and destroy itself on the highway, aluminum, oil and coolant everywhere. I hit the brakes pull over, wait for the smoke to clear and pop the hood. still mildy smoking we realize what exactly has happened, and start picking up shards of metal from under the car. needless to say we waited on the side of the road while other imports and the occasional mustang and camaro drive by most likely laughing at the honda on the side of the road. I'm laughing by this point because really, the car was in pretty rought shape when i got it and everyone figured the motor would go, just didn't think it would happen on the only day we all got away from the girlfriends to actually go out in the cars. anyways we got to the meet about 2 hours late. the meet was alright, i thought there would have been more honda's there but whatever.

now I'm stuck with a decision, either get a new B18C5, or go to K20R. i thought i'd get some insight about it here before i make my final decision.

If your R is clean title, bone stock, and all original, I would go with the proper factory setup. If its already heavily modified, has previous paint/body work, or has a rebuilt title, then go with whatever setup you want, K or otherwise.

+1

You could also turbo your b18c5...

Need to factor in cost as well.

You have the tranny and head still, so you would only need the bottom end.
Re-build the bottom end with manley rods, mahle pistons, boost it, and kill k series

I need a new motor all together. there is a hole in the block. i wish i could still use the matching block to the car, i'm going to hate to have a different vin on the motor now. and it needs new paint and some minor body work. I have a mountain of parts in the garage for it, but really no point in putting them on. how bad this was is just kinda setting in today...

Sorry for the mishap. B18C* is obviously a great motor. So depending on what your plans are for your car, you might actually want to stick with that. If you're looking to get a little more out of your engine, the K has more potential. You should weigh out the differences in price. If it's just a street car, the B would be cheaper, less modification. I personally track my R, and love my K. So do all my friends that have converted over.

If it's an all original, stock, clean Type R, then go C5. If you had mods like suspension, interior swap/upgrade, and aero, go K.

Just my $.02

all the car had on it was an AEM cold air, catback, and H&R springs. interrior is stock, and it needs a bit of body work and fresh paint. i priced out a B18C5 longblock brand new for 3000, using some of the leftover "not blown up" parts, the K swap is going to be roughly 10 grand for a complete swap. maybe that's a bit high, but i always go high rather then low incase of unexpected happenings. now say a K swap is 10 grand, and instead of going K i spent that 10 grand on a B18C5 build. NA of course. so I end up going to the Toda site, and checking it out. i mean the motor is toast, may as well build something crazy right. thinking 12.4:1's VTEC killers and ITB's. ya not cheap but basically the same price as a K swap, and the way i look at it is, it's a DC2, keep the B18C5. sorry K owners there is just something that isn't right about putting a K into a true DC2 Type R. I'm kind of a purist that way i guess.

on the other hand, i start looking into a mild turbo build, (all my buddies are running boost and think NA sucks) so i look into it. stock B18C5 with a turbo, but where does it end. the motor is out, may as well get a bottom end to handle more boost, then your building a motor in the $10,000 rang as well. it is just a street car, but a very rarely driven street car, and honestly i don't want to go down the road most taken with the car. turbo honda's are everywhere. yes it's more power but I want to build a car that will have mods not often seen. originality is what i'm most after.

I've gone through almost every possible engine combination in my head and the frustration is setting in, this car was supposed to be an easy build but, really that never happens. I'm going to call Kaizenspeed and get their thoughts

You're from "I don't know the difference between you're and your land; 50 miles south of f-offityville USA." Someone from Canada cares, but we don't have our own sub-forum.

He's obviously jealous or he wouldn't have said anything.

Find a block/head locally and stick with B. K is a ton of money!

Wow... do you ever have anything positive to contribute? (That was a rhetorical question)

Sorry to hear about the engine issue! But I'm going to have to agree with n00bs'!!!

What a Troll.

Honestly, I think that you should do what makes you happy. If you were satisfied with the power of your C5, then get a new block. If you want a little more pep a six speed transmission , and don't mind paying for axles, K-pro, etc. etc. (mind you a lot of R purists will be mad at you for "hacking" up a type-R.) go K-series. I couldn't live with myself if modified my R so "irreversibly" but that's just my .02.

Either way, good luck with the rebuild.

Agreed, except I wouldn't ever go K in the 2nd case.
