hey guys, im still learning so if im sounding like an idiot..... i am. im trying to better learn diagnose and work on my new toy.

i just bought a 2000 civic cx hatch with a gsr swap. this thing is so much fun its rediculous. got it from a 50 year old guy that did it right and kept it very clean. it runs really strong and im thinking its the most fun ive had for a while.

the motor is stock and when i got it i dont think it was burning oil...... or i didnt notice.

i have run it hard a few times (hit the limiter once). i have now noticed that she is burning some oil (not a lot and not really consistent) occationally i will visibly see smoke sometimes none. it dosn't always smoke just in v-tech either. sometimes it happens when i let off in a higher gear let the rev's come down and then get back into it. it runs very strong and i dont think im losing any power.

im getting a comp test this week to see if its equal across all 4 cyl

so what i need info on is possible causes?
- did i get into it harder that the previous owner had for a long time and pop a head gasket?
-when i changed the oil i may have put in about 1/4 of a quart too much, again is this enough to pop a head gasket?
- is it just an older motor and runs a little loose (in which case i shouldnt worry)

other than the comp test are there any give away signs that point you in a specific direction i.e. piston rings or head work?

I guess im basically asking where to start, i suppose the comp test is the real starting point on this trouble shoot.

any info or reccomendations would be greatly appreciated

Along with the compression test, [if low or uneven] have them do a leak down test.

What color is the smoke?

Smoke on deceleration is most likely worn valve guides/seals, will also give a "puff" of smoke on start up. 94

yup. as stated, blue smoke on decel is likely guides/seals. specifically, from the intake side. the high vacuum of decel pulls oil through the guides and is burned in the combustion chamber.
whereas, blue smoke on accel can be caused by exhaust guides/seals. among other things
