How much paint should i buy to respray my integra?
Hey guys,
I have a DC2 two door that im doing a complete resturation on. i need to know how much primer to buy for it. I plan on putting ATLEAST three coats of primer on the entire outside of the car, engine bay, and as well as the inside of the car (i have it completly gutted). how much primer should i buy?
Also i plan to spray the outside of the car, as well as the engine bay with a black base coat. i would like to do three coats of that as well. how much black should i order
Third, the entire inside of the car (roof, flooring, sides) is going to be blue. i would like to do three coats as well. How much blue should i order.
Finally, How much clear should i get for the exteriror, interrior, and engine bay. ill prolly shoot three coats of that as well.
amount of primer: ?
Amount of black paint: ?
Amount of blue paint: ?
Clear/hardner: ?
Any help would be great, thanks guys

Just painted my DA last year. heres my sugestion for starters.
1 gallon of epoxy primer. (black)
1 gallon of high-build primer
1 gallon of bondo (i prefer evercoat rage gold)
3 quarts of black basecoat
1.5 quarts of blue base
2 gallons of clearcoat
1 gallon of epoxy primer. (black)
1 gallon of high-build primer
1 gallon of bondo (i prefer evercoat rage gold)
3 quarts of black basecoat
1.5 quarts of blue base
2 gallons of clearcoat
I just painted my eg a couple of weeks ago. It all depends on your paint/primer mixing ratio and your paints thinness/transparency.I went with a burnt orange color that was very thin/transparent. It took a gallon just to do the firewall, door jambs, trunk jambs and exterior. My paint had a 1:1 ratio.Which means after adding reducer my gallon turned into 2 gallons.Your high-build primer will lay real thick so the coverage will be good.Just remember to block it down.I dont think you need to spray the high-build on the inside,a 1k primer should do the trick.I would also use the 1k primer to do the engine bay unless you smoothed out the firewall.
In the end I agree with 1cleanDA in the amounts as long as your paint ratio is 1:1. Also dont forget your tack rag and acryliclean (sp). And remeber a good paint job is 90% prep work and 10% painting.Good luck.

Is 9.5 gallons typical for a paint job? If a gallon of paint/solvent weighs as much as a gallon of water, that is almost 80lbs of your cars weight just in paint, assuming you used it all. Crazy! Sorry to get off topic but that is something that never enters the weight or paint discussion.
well typically no you will not use it all. But the next size down from a gallon is a quart and if you buy it by the quart you will almost pay double if not more than double. Also what if you mess up somewhere and need to redo it. you end up sanding alot of the primer down before you paint anyway. Its is always better to have a little extra than not enough.I always get a touch up paint bottle too for some of my extra paint.Hopefully he will not be putting a gallon of bondo in his car either.Thats a lot of dents!
But in the end you do probably get 30-40lbs in paint.I never really thought of it like that.Todays lesson sand your car down to bare metal and rattle can it, you can shave 40lbs.LOL.

the paint is in liquid form and will not be close to the same weight when done drying, maybe 1/10 - 1/20 original weight. so 80lb in can 4lb or so on car. if you're really interested in the actually weight you can use a full new pint and check its weight then open it let it dry up and check again,

all depends on how crazy you get. unless the car is rusty or you're changing colors you don't need primer at all
2 quarts of basecoat makes a gallon of sprayable. that's enough for one good fat coat on the car with two coats on the front end.
you will want a gallon of clear and quart of activator
if you did this on the cheap
1. gallon of advantage clear with activator $100
2. two quarts omni base color $80
3. sand paper, tape, paper, body filler $40
if you're changing color you'll want a primer sealer. white primer is used on light colors to brighten them. grey is neutral and black is designed for darker colors that you want to be really dark. long story short grey is the most commonly used primer color
