Homemade booth, guns and paint. Comments please.
I found a lot of info but would just like some feedback on my particular plan.
So I will be building a paint booth with PVC pipe and painters plastic, using a couple box fans with HEPA filters to provide particle filtered ventilation.
I have very little experience with spraying but plan on taking the time to practice and do it right.
I have two cheap IronForce guns I assume I can use for primer.
I've read up a lot and I'm liking what I hear bout Devilbiss. I plan on spraying urethane metallic black, if possible I want to find a metallic black with a bit of a red reflection.
So my questions are;
Are there any guns you guys can vouch for that will be well suited to metallic paints, preferably that I can also use for flat colors and clear coats as well? If possible I want to invest in just one quality gun.
I would definitely like to stay around $200 but the quality of the job is most important.
What metallic paints and clears would you recommend?
Also any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks guys.

You have the right idea, but I would do a lot more research on autobody101.com before you start.
I have had success with a Devilbiss Finishline 2 with solid colors, but it's probably not the best for metallics. What is your budget?

Thanks man, I will defiantly have to make an account over there. My budget isnt really set in stone, I have most the stuff for the booth already, I have a 15 gallon, 150 PSI compressor (I just need a moisture separator). As for a gun I defiantly would like to stay in the $200-$300 range, maybe a little a little more if there is a gun that is undoubtably worth the difference. And for paint I'm really not sure, my budget is whatever it costs I guess. I want paint that is the higher end of mid quality that will come out nice and glassy if I put the time and work into it. Doesn't need to be a a big expensive name brand or anything just something reputable for being good to work with and giving good results. Defiantly want to stick with the same brand for all steps, I've even been considering Shirwin-williams paint. I've just had a hard time getting feedback on metallic paint brands. I'm aware that most paints are just a personal preference from one painter to another, since I have no experience with brands I want to try one that most people have positive things to say about it.
How many CFMs @ what psi does your compressor put out?
I'm with you on the paint brands, everyone seems to think that something different is the best. What I usually do is talk to the guys at the auto paint store and tell them about your project and see what they recommend. I have used OMNI a few times with great results and it is around $100 gallon, but it is essentially a cheaper paint (made by PPG). If you want good stuff I would go higher than that and expect somewhere around $200-300 gallon.

2. I have a Devilbiss GTI up for sale if you're interested. I only used it for about 2 months, but just didn't like it. I prefer my Sata instead. I'm only asking $215shipped for it. Comes with 3 tips as well 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, so just PM me if you're interested
3. There's all kinds of metalic paints. You could go to the paint store and tell them what exactly you're looking to get, and they'll most likely have a book with that color and can mix it right up. If not, you could get some red glitter to add in with your paint.
depends on the car and if you're doing a color change inside and out. If I'm repainting a car the same color, I normally buy a gallon, cause it's better to have more than to not have enough
my buddy just painted my car and did a full color change. he did NOT pull the interior and spray the inside.he only sprayed the jams and engine bay, the entire outside of car. took exactly a gallon. he did spill some on accident when we first bought the paint. we are not sure how much though. we used the cheaper line made by glasurit. it is a metallic paint and it sprayed very nice.i think it was a sata gun but i will have to ask him the details. ill post again. also ill bump my thread so you can see the results
adam jeffery
