Default What engine should I swap into my 93 Del Sol S? Pt.2

Hi All,

I tried this post once with tons of conflicting answers and reply's with just engine names and no reasons why they are a good choice.

So, I wanted to give more details of what I'm trying to do and how I want to go about doing it, to hopefully get more specific answers.

I'm trying to find an engine to build to swap in my 93 Del Sol S.

Here are my requirements:
- Want to build from a BARE block.
- Want a fast street car (0-60 somewhere in the <6.0 range). This does not have to be done on the 1st pass, just want a motor that will be capable of it in the future.
- It's not for track, autoX, DD, etc. It's just to build and learn and have fun.
- Decent Block/Part availability
- Needs to handle a turbo
- Relatively inexpensive. I would like to keep the engine around $2500 total. I.e. Block, heads, manifolds, gaskets, no turbo for this part of the budget.

Thanks again in advance to everyone.

BTW, The Honda community is pretty awesome so far, better than others I've been apart of

This is your third thread about the exact same thing. You are going to get the EXACT SAME ANSWERS as in the last two threads you started. There are too many choices and too many ways to do the exact same thing. You will NEVER NEVER NEVER get one solid answer.

This is why I always say to do your own research and not let other people's opinions matter. The only time you should be asking a question is during your build when you run into a problem.

How about a ls/vtec? No, scratch that... B16. After thinking about it... b18c. Actually a b18b would be good.

Not trying to be a dick, but get the point?

It's my 2nd thread about which engine I should get, 1 other post I had was about the difference in B20 blocks.

Answers like "I would get a B18", "D16 FTW", tell me nothing.
I am constantly doing research, and asking questions to the Honda experts is part of it.

I'm not trying to troll or being purposefully annoying.

Can ALL of the D/B/H/F/K engines handle turbo? Are they all within the $2500 range? Are they all very easy to find? If all of these answers are yes, I'll just buy the block with the most displacement.

I think my question this time around is more specific and I was hoping since I gave more detail this time around, that I would get more narrowed answers.

I'm looking to get factual answers not opinions.
Like some stats, links, etc that prove why the engine meets the above criteria.

Sorry if I'm breaking any forum etiquette as well.

I don't actually or I would stop asking this question and have something picked out already.

Good luck with that. BTW J-series are the biggest engines.

research. no question you ask hasn't been answered before.

and yes they can all handle turbo. if you took your time you pry could buy them for 2500. not easy to find.

and you still have no idea that buying the biggest block means fitting it into the smaller car is gonna take a ***** load of work. do research with the questions you ask. or don't ask pipe dream q's.

From my experience,, I would go B18B swap with turbo... Your $2500 budget hopefully is for parts only.... Dont bother with B16,, its a torqueless motor... Gsr are nice but they tend to be pricey... the way I see it,, B18c swaps go for about $2800 on ebay,, Ls swaps are pretty plenty for $1500.. with the remaning $1000,, you can use it towards a nice turbo kit.. I've been through almost every single swap and variations with you name it,, ek, eg, del sol, crx.. sohc, dohc, ls/vtec, boost, supercharged,, I think I tried all variations of B and D motors... and it really depends on your budget and what kind of driving style you are looking for... but for now,, My civic is running on a LS swap with a custom gsr trans with itr diff and a greddy turbo kit running at 15psi and all I can say is its Hella Fun.... way more fun than a gsr swap... Dont bother with K swap,,, its still way too over your budget..

Your post doesn't make any sense? I havent' read either of your previous post but I see how you got conflicting suggestions. I.e.

- Want a fast street car (0-60 somewhere in the <6.0 range). This does not have to be
done on the 1st pass, just want a motor that will be capable of it in the future.
- It's not for track, autoX, DD, etc. It's just to build and learn and have fun.

Is this a show car?

Since you have all these high expectations and your on a 2500$ budget, your sol is S.O.L.

Then why not make a suggestion to help the problem instead of posting nasty comments?

What is reasonable for $2500?
What would the actual cost be to fill all these "high expectations"?

Nope, just wanted to learn about engine mechanics, etc so I bought a car to work on. It'll be a weekend warrior until/if I sell it.

All this research and price calculations can be done by you yourself. You are going to get many different opinions as you can already see with this thread and I am sure with your other threads. Are you really wanting to find that person to spoon feed you all of this information? All I can tell you at this point is to read some articles on Honda Tunings magazine and then summarize to yourself what you liked.

You should get a V8 that would be the tops.

All of these questions could be answered with some of your own research.

If you look around you'll see the D-series turbo is VERY popular. B-series turbo is popular as well. Hell, there's an H-series turbo in Honda Tuning right now! F-series have never picked up popularity like H-series have, but I'm sure if you looked at some '90+ Accords you'll find some are turboed successfully. And of course you'll see a mess of turbo K-series.

How well do each handle boost? Well, *I* would have to do extensive research for *you* to be sure how well each series does, much less if certain engines in said series might be a better idea than others. B18C5 versus 18B1, for example.

Asking random people in a tech forum what engines sell for is ridiculous. Look yourself! This is like calling your friend to see what the prices are on Castrol at Autozone. Sure, maybe they know... at their store the last time they bought oil. Maybe they bought conventional but you're really more into synthetic or blend.

There are plenty of online sellers of engine swaps. You can find a lot of info on this site about which companies to steer clear of and which to trust.

Somehow most people manage to swap an engine in without making such a thread. Engine swaps are NOT rare. Can you imagine what it would look like if everytime anyone had to make their mind up about a swap, they made a thread asking which they should get?

So open up Notepad and start looking up engine specs.

ENGINE
HP / TQ
PRICE
SWAP PARTS NEEDED

You might start figuring out you want this certain engine, but only from this year to this year. Then you figure out how to tell which one you're looking at so you don't get scammed. Maybe list a few prices from wherever you find the prices. Be ready for prices to vary depending on if mounts, axles or harnesses are included.

That could start you out. You might read up and figure you LOVE this such and such engine. It suits all your needs, everything is great about this motor. But wait... I could buy an entire car for that price. Not to mention I still need this part, this part and this part, and I want to do this maintenance before it goes in the car. So crap, let's cross that engine off the list.

Be warned. Some swaps will nickel and dime you to death.

del sols have a lot of frame twist under cornering load which is exacerbated by heavy engines. prelude engines are too heavy and the weight is not distributed well for the geometry of a civic.
you cant beat a vtec d series out of an ex for bang for buck. you could get a complete engine for less than a grand.
the weight will feel a little different with the B16 or 18 but not much and the power is great in that little car.
B18C is really the pick for me for most power with great handling still intact and nowadays you can find a swap for 2k-2500

all that being said you should first consider:
if you want a cheap fun del sol then your biggest priorities in my opinion are

1:lightness
2:frame stiffness
3:tires

strip it to the metal, put 8 lb wheels on it, run the current engine to its limits on a track day and then re prioritize your money.
if you didnt keep it in the floor most of the time then you should spend on handling

This really helps narrow down selections and explain why.

Thanks!
