Anyone ever used Gates timing belt kit?
I need a timing belt, and water pump really bad, I was looking around on eBay and saw this.

It's considerably cheaper then Honda, and I have heard good things about Gates Timing belts. I am mainly just wondering if it's good or bad?
What's your take on it?
I most likely will just get OEM, but If i can save $100 what the hell.
Thanks guys/girls.

Gates make good belts (actually Gates makes the Y7/Y8 belts for Honda, if you get one from the dealership it will have both the Gates logo and the Honda logo stamped on it) I'd go OEM on the waterpump though. I've seen too many aftermarket ones fail way too early.
It've used the Gates timing belt kit that containes the belt and the tensioner. I would use a Gates belt again, but I've become more savvy with buying genuine parts online, so I might choose genuine in the future.
I also replaced the water pump and cam seal at the same time.
IMO - the cause of most water pump failures is probably associated with the addition of incompatible coolant to the cooling system which resulted in a gritty precipitate that causes premature failure in the WP seal and gasket.

I've seen lots fail just because they were made from poor components. Most of them were running Prestone Green coolant before and after. Best combo I've found is genuine Honda water pump and genuine Honda coolant though.
I've seen them fail as well, actually, will be doing mine and my friends at the same time. He used a Nappa pump that didn't make it 20k.

Right now, I've got pretty much just water in it.
I'll likely switch to Honda coolant after I get everything fixed.
Thanks for the help guys!

I would replace the tensioner as cheap insurance. Nothing like doing more work than you have to.
Which Honda coolant is it for these? Is it the Blue coolant? At a body shop I worked at years ago had a Civic come in will 1200 miles on it and it has blue coolant in it.
I was going to replace it, I was just wondering if you have to becuase I have heard of people not replacing it.
My local dealer says there only 1 kind. It's blue and $17 a gallon.
i have seen a nappa pump fail. looked like the blades actually where to big and the blades where touching the water ports on the inside. pump seized, and basically snapped the timing belt.
id say get ether a gates/oem belt, oem water pump.
it's a toss up for the tensioner and front main seal.
You can still get the green stuff over here, it's a deep emerald green over the typical neon green. The blue stuff is called type 2.
That's my my worry. When his pump stopped, it took a couple teeth with it.
I deffinetly will never be putting that napa crap in my car. I have napa wires, and they're getting tossed lol
I haven't been looking much, but I haven't found gates belts by them selves.
I have OEM water pump for 65, belt 30, tensioner for 42, and seal I think is like 12 or something.
On ebay for 140ish I I found timing belt, pump, and the 3 other belts, from Honda dealer.
let's say I choose not to replace the tensioner, what could happen?
Wont tension the belt right, and it comes off?

But I found everything for $140 from Honda on ebay, and then I could just pick up the seals for not much more.
How would I chceck if it's good or bad? What should I be looking for.
You dealer is insane. I think the last Y7 pump I ordered was about $88, and normally we get completely shafted here in Canada. To check the tensioner just see that it rolls freely and doesn't sound dry or rough. If it does go bad it'll seize and the timing belt will rub against it, at some point it will wear through the belt.

I belive I saw it for $65 but it was a while ago.
I'll deffinetly check that, I really hope I don't have to replace it.
Thank you very much!
I checked amazon for a second, but I really didn't find anything.
I did find this though--

Or, hondapartsunlimited has a belt/pump for $100
Then I figure $20 for the cam seal and main seal.
