89 Accord Tuning; Ideas Needed
I have recently obtained my mother's old Accord LXi vintage 1989. I personally feel that while I am happy with a 5-speed, I am not happy with the power of this car, or lack thereof. I need ways to give it some kick, considering a limited budget and 149K on the odometer. Any ideas...
A reground camshaft will give a nice little kick, then the I/H/E would help some too. Believe it or not (aka...from what you may have heard), the A20 CAN be built up pretty good. Check out www.openloopmotorsports.com . The white coupe was dyno'd at 140 hp (I think...going off memory here) at the wheels. And then there's Justin's turbo (www.88turboaccord.net ), but that's alot of $$$ there, lol
Gotta run...
Gotta run...
The A20 is a trooper for the long haul. a B series motor will swap in too.
edit: BTW that is probably one the best built accords ever. enjoy it.

Oh yea, I almost forgot about the Prelude transmission. You can directly swap a 2nd gen (84-87) Prelude transmission into the Accord. It has sportier gear ratios for a bit better performance. If you do this swap, you'll also need to use the clutch and flywheel from the Prelude, and the Ludes flywheel is lighter than the Accords so you'll get a little gain from that too. Check out http://www.3geez.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=165 for more info on this swap
Greensleeper's right, the B series engines also swap right in. Placeracing makes the mounts, axles, and wiring adaptors. I'm not real familiar with this dept though....personally I'd rather build up the good 'ol A20A3. But you can check out http://www.3geez.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=90 for more info.
For the time being, a good tune up never hurts anything if it hasn't had one in awile.
Where at in Chi-Town are you at? I used to live up that way not long ago (Lombard to be exact)

I'm out in Mount Prospect.
I'll have to look into the transmission swap. I am pretty sure it has been a while since it has had a good tune-up. It is time for an oil change right now anyway, so I can do that relatively quick. How about opening up the intake? Think that will help much?
