Default vtec problem

hey. just got my H2B running. Istalled flat valves, and blox springs/type B cams into the head. Car is running smoothly on a hondata basemap. When I hit VTEC, it goes bad. Suddenly the motor sounds way out of time. It doesnt sound like a rev limiter but more like an engine malfunction. Its like a popping/wall hitting/terrible noise. I let off the throttle and normal operation resumes. I have no check engine lights or other issues. Im thinking the problem is mechanical, associated with the rocker assembly. Has anyone experienced this? Ideas as to where to troubleshoot would be greatly appreciated.

I sort off have the same problem with my b16a swap, sometimes vtec doesn't kick in and sometimes it crackles ( like a phone when you make a call with bad signal) and I have a check engine light and vtec does not kick in when the light is on.... Don't know whats wrong
