Default ZC DOHC Code 4

i have an 89 crx with a zc dohc in it. throwing code 4. under no circumstances will this thing rev over 4500 rpm. it craps out and sputters. replaced map. computer swapped repeatedly. nothing changes. i've read that the cylinder position sensor, on the exhaust cam, can cause this, but i would be throwing code 9. my main question is, is the crank angle sensor in the distributor? and if so, where do i begin my search for a distributor? i've heard an 88 integra will work. but i'm not sure if it's a 5 wire like i am looking for.

any help is greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem with my d15b2 I know its not the same engine but its sounds like your dizzy is done what I would do is take your dizzy off and compare it to the 88 or an 89 my dad has an 89 and the dizzy should work off of that check if the wires line up if they do it should work just make sure it has the same wire count as yours

88 and 89 distributors should work, the 86 and 87 models had a vacuum advanced distributor and wont work.

Code 4 is for ckp. Crank position sensor. Its also located in the dizzy and also makes the car run in limp mode. start checking for damaged, loose or shorted wires and make sure the pins at the ecu are making a good connection and are in the right location find a ecu pin out for you ecu and start checking wiring

for some odd reason, the cps is in fact the one on the exhaust cam. replacing the distributor did nothing so i have that part on order now instead. i ordered one for an 88 integra and based on the pics, they're identical.

updates when the part is in.

bump for an update. I have the same code on my built B16 ef Hatch, checked the CKP wires from sensor to ECU, the wires are in the right place and have a good clean circuit with my tester. I've tried 2 other dizzies that throw NO CODES when placed on another OBD-1 vehicle. I'm lost here..... WTF?

1.) The dizzy is good
2.) the wiring checks out
3.) the car was running good for a few days when I put the motor in with no codes and the code just popped up one afternoon (haven't changed anything before the light came on)

Should I just try running NEW wires directly from the sensor to the ECU pins for ***** and giggles? I think I am going to. If it doesn't help, I can just take them off and put it back.

Also an FYI, the car was tuned like almost 2 years ago on Crome Pro and never had any problems before either, it's still all the same stuff on the car with regard to the ECU (injectors, dizzy, motor, MAP, TPS, etc etc all the same as before)

Can it be the tune you think???
I can't get ahold of my tuner to get the car re tuned yet he's extremely busy, so haven't been able to pick his brain yet. Howard's a busy busy man lol.

Thanks!

The CPS is on the exhaust cam on OBD0 models and within the distributor on OBD1 models.

When timing it, make sure the arrows on the cams are facing up and the INSIDE markings of the cams are in line with the head (Don't try and line up the outside lines to the head!). The result is that the arrows will be slightly leaning in toward each other. Obviously make sure that the crank is in its correct position before aligning the cams.
