Icon6 PR3-3 Cylinder Head Issue

Good Afternoon H-TECH,

It has been almost 13 years since I have been involved with Honda motors. Upon the purchase of my new house I came across an EK Hatch in the neighborhood that had a blown JDM Type R motor. I noticed it had not moved in several months so i took it off his hands. I am currently in the process of rebuilding this motor. Upon removal of the cams there is some noticeable scaring on the intake side, closet to the cam gear. I have attached pictures. I am wondering if this needs to be taken to a machine shop or can I simply smooth this out. I am putting new BC stage 3 cams in and I want them to function correctly. Any thoughts on this issue will be greatly appreciated.

Looks thrashed to me. It looks like they removed the shaft that holds the rockers in place, put it back in, didn't line it up right along with the oil restrictor/jet thing, and burned up that cap.

I'd replace the head, looks like a lot of material needs to come off to repair that.

Manny,

Thank you for your feedback regarding this issue. I was hoping that replacing the head would be the last resort.

I have CNC equipment at work and I can take down the head material to a nice accurate finish and replace the cam cap; however, my concern is clearance. Will this cam operate corrrectly with this type of repair? OR is that too risky?

Throw it in the trash. You can get used heads for less than it would cost you to fix it.

Heads no good. Material would have to be added first, then bored to oem spec. Id be more interested in finding out the cause.

Thank you everyone for the prompt feedback. I will be searching for a new head.

According to Endyne, "that's what happens when someone doesn't follow the procedure Honda recommends for setting timing belt tension. If the belt is too tight, it diminishes the oil clearance under the drive-ends of the cams...and galling is the result."

So note to everyone! Pay Attention to procedures, they are there for a reason.
