Default P0730 code in 02 Civic Ex

My friend has an 02 Civic Ex that just had his check engine light pop up. The code is P0730 and its like incorrect gear ratio. His car has a shaky time in accelerating from a stop. But after it shifts to second its fine. Are there any simple solutions or things to check? Or is it just a bad tranny?

Oh and by the way its an automatic; yes i know very disappointing

Are you sure that's the right code? P0730 is "Problem in Shift Control System"

Are there any other codes stored in addition to that one?

Simple solutions? Hmm... not really, but you could try some of the simpler things.

Start with draining the ATF through a filter and check for metal debris or excessive clutch material. If it's excessive, he may need a new transmission. If it's not, just replace the ATF.

You'll need to have a shop check the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th clutch pressure. If it's not to spec, you've got some major work to do. If they are to spec, replace the shift solenoid valves A and B, and the A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valves.

Basically, the transmission needs work. This is more than likely a mechanical problem, not an electrical one, and something that isn't going to go away.
