Default Quick Question: 02 Civic Automatic Transmission into a 96 Civic?

I checked through several FAQs and couldn't find an answer to this, if I missed it I apologize.

Friend of mine asked me this today and I wasn't quite sure what to say:

Basically his dad wrecked his 2002 Civic (not sure what trim but I know it's a D series trim level) and he has a stock 96 Civic that has a transmission going out. He asked if he could put the 02 automatic transmission into his 96 automatic car. At first I thought in theory it would work, I mean it's D series to D series so it technically should bolt up, but I'm concerned the ECU won't know what to do with the newer transmission since it's OBD2b and from an entirely different generation of Civic. I don't know a whole lot about automatics so sorry if this is a dumb question.

Doesn't fit. Also as far as the '96 - '00 Civics go, the DX/LX automatic transmissions are different from the EX.

Ok thanks. I figured they would be too different for it to work properly, if not physically then electrically haha. Thread can be locked.
