Super Honda Noob (1st gen CRX content)
Forgive my noobidity, but why isn't there a subforum for pre-88 CRXs? Do they just suck?
On that note, should I buy this? http://denver.craigslist.org/cto/2317279927.html
And is it carb'd? Wikipedia won't tell me, and yes, Wikipedia is the extent of my CRX knowledge. I find it particularly hilarious/awesome that these things weigh 1800 lbs stock.
EDIT: Just found the "Classic Honda" subforum.... I guess I didn't realize that cars up to '87 were considered "classic"...

Or just swap in a 85-87 1.5 CRX/Civic Si or 1.6 twin cam 86-89 Integra fuel injected engine. Super easy, goggle red-pepper-racing and check out all the info you will ever need on swaps and parts.
considering your vast knowledge of this topic, i would say for you to buy an 88 and up and leave this to someone who won't butcher it up and knows what they are doing... you won't be happy with it, trust me..

Reason for this car being I drive 60 miles a day to school/work and back, and my BMW only gets 30 mpg avg. Nope, not the stereotypical "BMW snob", because all of my BMWs are sub-$1500 pre-90s hunks in various states of disrepair, and I actually DO have decent BMW knowledge, unlike a "BMW snob". (not much Honda knowledge)
So ANYWAY... back on topic, I DID end up doing a cost analysis of my BMW E30 (30mpg) and a gas-mileage modded CRX (50mpg) and I would only save about $1000 a year in gas (haven't calc'd insurance savings, but it probably wouldn't be much), so it ends up being a moot point anyway. I had it in my head prior that I would be saving alot more than that.
But thanks to all for the input, and maybe one day I'll pick up a cheap CRX for S&G's, they seem like fun beater cars, I am still surprised at how lightweight they are, it must be super easy to make them fast.
no need to get all angry.. you never said what your intentions were going to be with the car. these hondas aren't like 88+civic/crx because nothing is interchangeable. most people who purchase them end up messing them up then just sending them to the junkyard. i've been around here a while.. i know what i'm talking about. i've seen it happen far too many times. once someone realizes that you can't just go to pep boys and buy "mod" parts for these, they run and hide..
if your true goal is to get a high MPG cruiser, this would fulfill that. i drive 110miles a day in my 91 Civic Si and average 35mpg, and that is fine for me. btw, have you seen fuelly.com? pretty cool to keep track of your averages and costs.. i use it.
if you're still interested in the car, we can still help. i really don't mind helping as long as you lay out your intentions for the car.. it always helps to know..
is the e30 a 325 or 318? 325es maybe?

It would take alot for some online forum to make me mad.So anyway, yeah you are right, I never really stated my intentions in the first place.
So it is interesting that these cars have no interchangeable parts with the later CRX, i did not know that. To be honest, something in me has for a long time wanted to rock a cheap CRX slammed on some cheap coils, steelies, and a flat black paint job and gutted interior. I don't know, call it the Dark Side in me.
I think it may be because good mods for BMWs can be pretty dang expensive (although I am sure the same is true for Hondas).I'll definitely check out fuelly.com.
I do appreciate the help, and that is why I came here, I don't know much, and you guys probably forgot more about Hondas after posting in this thread than I will probably ever know...
So you have made the mistake of asking me about my BMWs. Now I am just going to post a ton of pictures and probably give you more information that you wanted to know...
My primary BMW is a 1991 318is.
Quick Mod list:
H&R Race springs
Bilstien Sport Shocks
Full poly bushings
Recaro seats (Not pictured)
Suspension Technique swaybars
15x7 Kosei K1 (reppin Japanese wheels!)
Not mine but post-worthy. ( I took the pic though):
Open track day:
Little bit of autocross:

...Along with some rally

And some random pictures of work in progress:
nice. that autox looks a lot like the summit point washington circuit that is all karting now. i am involved with NASA so i have a soft spot for E30's cause of Spec E30.. i see them a lot. i would own one if i didn't have a miata set up for track.
as for the CRX, if you REALLy want a fuel sipper, look for an HF. they get 50+mpg. that dx would be a very good start. i'd go through it and replace all the vac lines for reliability sake. get a nice clean air filter.. get some light weight 13x5 inch CX wheels with some extremely low rolling resistance tires.. lower the front a touch, maybe add a cheap valance or an HF front lip. that would be a very good start for you with this car. don't bother swapping the motor. you'll just add weight and complexity without much gains at all. you can get a wideband O2 to monitor your fuel ratio etc so you can change your driving habits, which is TRULY what will save you money.
example; my 91 Si is rated for 28mpg highway. with very light throttle i am able to squeak out 36 and an occasional 40mpg..
edit; just thought of a few more things.. since this won't be a "race car", you can ditch weight by pulling the rear internal swaybar and also swapping the rear cast iron drums to the alluminum drums from the HF. much lighter weight.. maintenance is KEY to keeping the MPG up so be sure if you buy one to actually adjust the valves every 15k along with plugs. it is good for 1-2 mpg pending the wear.

WOW good eye! That sure is Summit Point!
Also, thanks for the info. I am sure this CRX is sold already, and that the owner is neglecting to delete the ad, but maybe i'll give him/her a call this weekend.
In other news, HERE is a screaming deal: http://fortcollins.craigslist.org/cto/2324204459.html
sub-200k E28 535is, these cars are sought after if they are in good shape. I sold one a while back for $3k (bought for $400 w/ bad clutch, pictured below.)
wow, yours is/was a nice one...
i only know it's summit point because i'm there a lot.. this week alone i have been there every day since tuesday, and am crewing at the MARRS SCCA race this weekend. i basically live there...
i loved the triple skid-pad as an autocross course. absolutely phenominal fun, especially in the wet.
oh well, keep searching for a first gen rex...
another car that may be good for you is an early VW diesel..

I bought a 1987 CRX, well actually I traded some herb for it, but thats besides the point. I already had a Weber 32/36 Carb on it without the air cleaner on top. Only things I have really done to it so far is added the air filter on top of the Weber and I did the whole vacuum system delete, which took me a good almost week to complete. I've replaced the spark plugs and spark plug wires, put in a new battery (which I plan to relocate to behind the passenger seat in the near future) Replaced the battery ground cable and the chassis ground cable. Installed a see thru in-line fuel filter. And changed the oil and replaced the oil filter. The issue that I'm running into is I can't for the life of me get this darn thing to idle below around 1600-2400 @ all times. Any suggestions? I'm open to pretty much trying anything.
