Default Odyssey 2000 driveshaft removal

I'm new to this tech forum. Hello to all.

I worked on a friend's Odyssey 2000. I tried replacing both passenger and driver side driveshafts. The shop manual says to Pry (left driveshaft)/tap (right driveshaft) the inboard joint to seperate the driveshaft from the differential case.

The passenger side driveshaft came off without much effort. But, I was not able to remove the driver side driveshaft from the differential case. I tried hard enough and stopped to avoid damaging the differential. I called a friend from out of town who specializes on transmissions and he told me that the Odyssey driver side driveshaft is nearly impossible to pull out and I run risk of damaging differential. He said that he drops down the transmission and then removes the driveshaft; and, even with transmission removed he said that driver side driveshaft is a b-i-t-c-h to remove. That's been his experience.

My question: Has anyone here had a similar experience with the driver side driveshaft? Should I drop the tranny to get a better angle on the inboard joint?

Your friend is a moron, because it will take about good 6-8 hours to drop the trans in that van, maybe less if you are over dosed on Red Bull. Its pretty simple, just take a 2 or 3 foot pry bar, insert it between the trans and the axle and give it a couple of quick strong jerks, the snap ring inside the trans will jump out of its grooves and you will be able to get the axle out. Its very simple, you just need to put some muscle in it. Also, the longer the pry bar, the more leverage you will have making it easier to get the axle out.

Ask your friend what is the difference between having the trans on the van and removed from the van. You still have to use the same method to get the axle out, so whats different??

Myroslav69m,

Please learn how to read first before you answer with a stupid solution. One of the axles comes out by prying and the other you need to tap the axle out. No room for prying the axle that requires tapping. The axle that requires a pry bar was easy to remove.

If the tranny is removed, you get a better angle to tap the axle out. Simple as that.

No offense was meant to you, but in order to drop the trans you HAVE to remove the axles, cradle, exhaust, steering rack and the list goes on. So, using a little brain and being creative with a pry bar (and yes, you can use the pry bar, I own 3 Odysseys right now and all 3 have new axles which I did myself), you can get the axle out.
I am sorry, I did not want to start a riot, I just figured that if your friend is mechanically inclined, he would know that to drop the trans you have to remove the axles.
Seriously, you need help or have a question do not hesitate, if some one tells you that you need to drop the trans to get an axle out, that right there is questionable.
BTW: Passenger side axle you do NOT remove from the differential, you tap/pry it out of the mid-shaft!

Also a slide hammer also helps sometimes with stubborn axles, I think I used one of those on one of my vans.

hey guys don't ****ing argue, you dont' HAVE to remove the drivers side axle to drop the trans if you want i can make a video of me yanking a trans out of a 2000 odyssey doing so the drivers side axle can be VERY stubborn to get out and if you do it wrong you can break it off inside the diff or damage the diff.

So there are two methods, remove the passenger side axle completly and go through there to hit the drivers side with a punch or you use my method and use two prybars top and bottom of the inboard joint at the trans side and give it a good shock there has been only one i have not gotten like that i had to use a chisel to bring it out turn it and work it more.

so in conclusion your both idiots :D

seriously though its just the internet theres no point in insulting one another when niether of you know what your talking about take that as you wish

He is talking about the passenger side axle, the one with the mid-shaft. Also, there is no way in hell you can snap an axle while trying to pry it out of the trans. The axle withstands 240+- HP and whatever torque the Odyssey makes, and you think you can snap it during removal? PLEASE understand that I am not trying to be a dick or start trouble, it just does not fit in my head how a human can snap an axle, unless you are Hercules. If a human can snap an axle during removal, then it should snap into pieces as soon as you put the van in drive.

And I think you are mistaking a 98 Odyssey without engine cradle with a 99+ Odyssey that has a cradle. It takes about 6 hours to remove the trans properly, (without half assing and cutting corners which almost always in the end cost you money because of broken parts).
Either way, the axles are always a little stubborn to remove, you never have to go to extremes of pulling the trans out, thats just ridiculous. If you are novice then just take the advice, if you think you are a pro and know all your stuff then do whatever you feel like doing, but please do not give bad advise.
