A friend of mine is converting his Civic GX from natural gas to gasoline. He got the motor to run on gasoline properly but the CVT will not help with the MPG's. Can a regular LX/EX auto transmission fit that same engine? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I'd doubt that you'd find someone on here that has done the same thing; or if you'll find any information on it. There are a few car models out now that get better MPG with a CVT than a manual / auto, so are you sure that's the case with this car?

To be completely honest, I'm just going by what he told me. He said the car is at 5k rpm @ around 50mph and he's getting shitty mileage. That's why he wants to know if a regular a/t will just bolt on.

No ****! Really?
The reason he changed it is because of the range the civic has and because there are very few natural gas stations here in New York City. This isn't Cali.

From what I've read, the only differences for the natural gas D series are the fuel delivery system and high compression pistons.... I wouldn't anticipate that the CVT would perform any differently if the fuel type was changed. I'd imagine that another trans would fit, but maybe consider going manual trans if you're confident enough to install the pedal and run hydro lines.
