Default Stripped head stud hole, need some info!

The threads from one hole, came out with the stud in my block when I took it apart last. I took it to the local machine shop and they put a helicoil in it.

Long story short, the helicoiled stud wouldnt tq down properly during assembly. The helicoil threads were completely wrecked.

The machine shop wanted to use an insert this time, but they cant seem to locate an insert to work for the thread pattern of my stud.

Does anyone know where I can find an insert that will work?
Or will I just have to oversize and go with a different stud.
I dont want to have to machine the head for every hole if I go with an oversize set of studs.

Im using ARP studs

What should I do?

I watched a dude awhile back put in 3 or 4 Time Serts in a GSR block. Far as I know they held, the kit can be a little expensive though.

Never ever put helicoil on stud hole or anything in that matter .... it won't work. you have to think your torquing 80+ftlbs and you think heilcoil or timeserts will repair it? lol
not to mention, OP's car is boosted.

to the OP, just get a different block or you can just take it to the machine shop with different size stud and im sure they'll take care of you.
yes, you'd have to drill your cyl. head out to fit oversize studs but most machine shops do that so no worries.

hope this help you out buddy.

the "different block" idea isnt an option.

Its a GE sleeved, o-ringed block. not just stock.

Any first hand information you can share that would show a timesert to not work or how you determined they dont work. If honda-tech's search was not so wack, its been discussed a few times and people have sucessfully used timeserts in boosted application without issue. In fact they are stronger than the original threads in the block.

I would agree on the HC though.

Edit: Timeserts are expensive though and you might weigh the cost of them installed vs the cost of having block/ head machined for larger headstud and new studs.

Like I said, I have seen a guy do 3 or 4 Time Serts in a GSR block and have known of others doing them in boosted applications and they held. I have also been told that the threads in them were actually stronger than the stock threads in the block.

There is a kit called big cert for honda head bolt thread repair. I can give you the part number for the actual inserts when i get back to my shop.

http://www.denlorstools.com/home/dt1...pair_kit_.html

A properly done time cert is stronger than the orginal threads.

Time serts are definitely a permanent fix. We bought our kit from a company that had the metric threads including Honda/Acura. Let me know if you can't find anything, I'll do some digging. Expect to pay about 200-300 for the kit unless you can find a shop that has the kit already.

We haven't pushed a block with time serts but we have had no problems on some 700 hp v8 blocks on the dyno.

We invested in all the Timesert kits years ago and they are well worth it for shops/builders who do alot of blocks. Each kit is about $400-500 so the average racer isnt going to buy it. Look for a local shop or any of the engine builders who specialise in Hondas in your area to see if they have any of the Timeserts.

Helicoil is NEVER a solution for head stud threads. Thats bad news right there. Most likely the standard Timesert wont work if its already helicoiled. There is a chance that the Bigsert, which is the oversized thread insert after the standard one may work.

The way it works is the existing threads are drilled out and the smoothed out. Its kinda of like "sleeving" a thread. You're prepping the existing thread and overboring the hole to accept a new sleeve. So the Bigsert is pretty much a bigger thread sleeve.

In my opinion, timeserts are stronger than the original threads themselves. You're not worrying stripping the threads when you have to torque down the head like you do with OEM.

Timeserts are only sold through certain distributors so check out www.timesert.com for the nearest distributor near you. They can also help you find a local place that may carry machinist tools. Some may stock certain timesert kits. But pretty much for the Honda stuff, you have to go to distributors like threadkits.com

The big cert kit will work if someone already attemted to helicoil it. Its designed as a second try kit.

I've seen some bad Helicoil jobs and the bigsert didnt work. LOL.

But ya, if it was a good helicoil work to begin with, it shouldnt have taken out that much material in the hole and the bigsert thread will fit.

ive used the time-sert kit myself a little pricey but works great. It takes time to do it so be patient and i would HIGHLY recommend completely taking apart the motor to do it. they also make a kit for holes that have been helicoiled and failed its an oversize insert for a regular size stud. Once you do use inserts u must use ARP Studs. Golden Eagle\AEBS\A1 tech will split the block in half due to the way they bottom out against the bottom of the block and not the top of the insert like the arp's. Usually the block gives before the steel insert will. Goodluck

Timesert will hold a head stud much stronger than the stock configuration. Its the only way to go when a hole blows out.

Your the one coming off as thinking your opinion is gospel and getting an attitude Captain America. Maybe you could help out and enlighten your fellow honda owner with some kind of explination next time instead of a sarcastic statement followed by LOL. Then maybe no one would find the need to burden you by asking how you came to the conclusion they would not work, especially in a boosted application.

Yes, a few times... as in I don't have an exact count but more than a couple. Given that reputable builders participated in those threads (which you know since nothing escapes someone as amazing as yourself), I figured its sufficient basis for me to question why you think they would would not work.

I realize now my error in asking for someone of your stature to enlighten us lowly huddled masses beneath you with some kind of additional information to go with your short statement.

ive timeserted 5 out of the 10 head stud holes in my block and boosted forever without a problem.

i bought the kit for the headbolt holts directly from timesert..it was not cheap.
