catalytic conv. advice...
hi all. this is my first post but im a long time reader here at HT, and now i have a problem im seeking some advice for.
i have two gen3 integras. a 94 4dr RS, and a 96 GSR('01 engine).
my RS was stolen back in Oct(got it back the same day, relatively intact), and once i got my tax return, i set about putting her back together, and last night, i bolted down the final bumper screws, and now shes ready for the road. sort of....
i took it to get it smogged today, and it ROYALLY failed. it runs great, no CEL and a brand new o2 sensor, but the emissions were excessively high. @ 15mph my hydrocarbon reading was 92(63max), my CO% was 0.85(max 0.54), and my NO ppm was 1326(max 711). the guy at the test center said it sounds like a bad cat, which after some research sounds to me like the culprit(but i could be wrong).
heres my question: instead of buying a new cat(i really dont have the bread for that right now), will the one off my 96 gsr work? will it fit? i know that the RS is obd1 and the gsr is obd2, but the o2 sensor for the rs is on the downpipe, not the cat, so it will still be there.
i just dont want to go through the trouble of jacking them up and trying to swap only to find out after all the work that its too short, too long, bolts dont match up, etc...
the smog is all thats holding up the reg., and im getting really tired of being a taxi. lol.
thanks for all your help.

@Scooooter7:
my intent was to swap them out and get my RS to pass so i can get my reg tags, then switch them back, but as kevin pointed out, its not do-able.
guess a new cat is in order!
is there anything else that might be causing readings like this? keep in mind its running great, and has a brand new(1mo) bosch o2 sensor.

@djkobe:
as far as i can tell, no vacuum leaks. the timing seems to be alright. it idles well and doesnt seem to stutter, but given your experience, ill check the timing and vacuum lines tomorrow.

After my '92 passing smog with flying colors every two years for the life of the vehicle...this year it failed the first try.
I then changed the plugs, oil and filter, cap and rotor and tried again. Now mind you the tech did not tell me anything after it failed except that I could bring it back for retest.
So I retested and it BARELY passed. At that time the tech said he was surprised it passed since I did not change the cat. He stated that it would have to be changed before the next test.
I figure that's not bad for a 19 year old vehicle with about 132,xxx miles.

@scooter:
in the process of putting it back together, i changed the plugs, oil, filter, and put a brand new distributor, cap, and rotor, and new plug wires as well, so im guessing its gotta be the cat. the car has 158,7XX mi on it, so its probably time.
