Need tips for buying an LS motor - not in car
Title says it, I need some tips on what to look for on an LS that isn't in a car. This is my first purchase, so I'm not trying to get shafted. Only thing that gets me, is that its not in a car, so no test drive. I don't really know what to ask about it, or what to exactly look for. Like maybe take the valve cover off, or turn the crank somehow. But I've never done any of that. Please help me out guys. I need someone's expertise on this.
You have the right train of thought. Take the valve cover off and bring a 19mm socket with a breaker bar so you can turn the crank. Take the valve cover off when you turn it to see everything rotate. If possible open the oil pan if there is no oil in it and take a look inside. If there is oil in it and the seller ops not to open it. Ask to drain the oil just to take note of the condition. You will see if it's like a milkshake and if it is then you know there is a blown headgasket. You seem to be on the right track and just trust your gut. Talk to the seller if he's the owner of the motor and see why it was pulled out. If the spark plugs are in it check to make sure they are not damaged and dont have metal particals all over it. Just like you be inspecting a motor in the car. There is no guarantee when buying a used motor ya know so you just have to make the best judgement. Good Luck
Take valve cover off check for build up, if your getting it with a transmission and the starter is still there hook it up to a battery and compression test, inspect spark plugs, check condition of oil and look for cam seal leak or valve cover leaks, if its decently clean theres a good chance the person took good care of their motor.
