starting issue 91 LS
Ok so about 2 weeks ago my car started this fun trend.
When it sits overnight it wont start it the morning, turn key everything comes on and works but when i go to turn it over i just hear the click in the dash but nothing from the starter.
So i get out there and push it and pop start it, starts right up works all day without starting issues. Once it sits over night....bam wont start again.
Now lastnight it did it while i was running around town. Turn off and started it fine about 5 times through out the night then i stop to get some food come out and nothing....have to push start it again. Now it wont start with out a push.
So my question is, could this be a starter issue or something with the ign.
I pulled all the connections cleaned redone. Redid everything on battery. All the grounds. Checked fuses, main relay clicks 3 times, etc etc. it gets spark and fuel, dizzy was rebuilt a while ago.
I did have a rear coolant line pop on me a few weeks back aswell, the one that goes into the ITM, if you're looking at it from the front its the left one outta the 3 in a row. Could it be from maybe coolant getting on the starter and it just needs to be taken apart and cleaned.
Anyone ever have this issue or know of the cause i will love you forever!

Ok, New starter went on...turned key and nothing. So now im at square one and outta ideas. Could the relay in the dash next to the cd player be the issue i pulled it and it didnt smell burnt but had a solid click.
Used a test light on the start signal fuse and got nothing, buddy said he thinks its that relay but i dont know because the relay is getting power.
It could be the IGN aswell, but i dont know of anyway to test it or even check it.
So if anyone has any ideas, you know love you and all that stuff.

Before you go and spend any more money on parts you may not need, try a "bypass jump", unplug the starter lead at the starter motor, [starter solenoid] use a jumper lead to supply power directly from the batt. to the starter motor, [starter motor solenoid terminal].
BE CAREFULL, make sure car is not in gear, engine WILL crank even if in gear and/or ign. switch is off.
Let me know what happens. 94

So the larger of the two plugs on the starter correct? it has the main one that is nutted down which im assuming it is, then it also has a little slide on one that looks like it runs along to the top o2 sensor. what is the little one for just so i know.
And will try the jump when i get off work.

It is the smaller of the two, the larger one is power from the batt. the smaller, [plug in one] is the starter lead, [from starter relay], unplug the smaller lead and touch a jumper from the batt., [or the larger cable on starter motor] to the terminal the starter lead was plugged into. 94
Well it started all weekend now that its warm outside....this car is haunted.
What would make it not start in the cold but start in the heat. I heard something about the relay expanding nough to make connection in the heat but idk what to think about this turd anymore.

the bypass jump tells you the starter motor and starter solenoid are good so the problem is someplace else.
Because you are not running into a problem now, and the only thing you have done was unplug and plug back in the starter lead, I would make sure the starter lead is plugged in tightly, if not, "crimp" the quick release terminal on the starter lead a little to make it fit tighter, maybe that is all that was wrong.
If you run into the problem again, just unplug and reconnect the starter lead and see if that solves the problem again.
If not you will have to look farther back on the starter circuit, either the starter relay, CIS, ign. switch or the wiring between them.
Unfortunately you can only troubleshoot an intermittent problem when the problem is there. 94

Basically the starter will not work unless there is a solid 8.0v min at the ign switch terminal. Less than this and the solenoid plunger will not travel enough inside the solenoid coil to move the starter pinion or make the contact inside the solenoid connecting (i.e. it will not click) If you are not hearing a click at the starter while someone is attempting to starter the engine you have either 1) 0 volts indicating one of the safety relays further back in the system (trans neutral switch, etc.) is not closing OR 2) you have low volts in the ign switch circuit in which fcm is dead on for the quick fix or the ground path to the starter is weak.
You could probe this terminal when the car is cold and watch the results on a meter to determine if its zero or just less than 8 volts.
I didnt think of the neutral switch. The kid who had it before me did something so you dont have to push the clutch in to start it. Could that be the issue here. Also what would make it start in heat but not cold, other than what i was told before.
