axle or wheel bearing?
Ok, so I have an odd sound coming from the driver's side wheel. It's real cold out right now, so I'm not trying to check it out yet, but just some suggestions would help. It make like a womp, womp, womp while i;m moving. I can also feel the vibration from it. I know normally when an axle is bad it has the clicking when you turn, so I'm guessing it's not that. My guess is the wheel bearing, what do you guys think? either way, once I get a warm day, I'll pull the wheel and see if I can figure it out. Thanks!
Best bet is to take it off and check. I had no noise coming from my driver axle, it slipped out while doing my suspension and found shards of metal in it. Broke the backs on my bearings.
More than likely its a wheel bearing. that sound is infamous for wheel bearings. The best way to check is drive your car at a speed that the noise is audible at than sway the weight of the vehicle from left to right. Wheel bearings make noise with load on them, so when you sway the car to the opposing side, the noise goes away.
Try that.
Try that.
sounds like a wheel bearing to me my 93 hatch would make a womp sound after i hit 70mph and i could feel it.... What i did was jack the car up "side that is making sound" and checked to see if the tire would wobble freely wich it was so i would try to see if that works for you

Not tryin' ta be smart here but check your wheelnuts first.
Failing that jack up that corner, grab the wheel at 12 and 6 (top and bottom)and try and push it in and out and listen for knocking noise. Then spin it pretty fast and listen for a rough bearing (kinda dragging whoosy noise) and while your dare be aware that a bent drive, bent or worn track rod or even bad brakes could probly make a similar noise.
Hope this might help..............

had same noise on my civic, swap the tire where the noise is coming from with any of the other 3, if noise follows tire, its the tire, if it stays coming from the same spot, its either your axle bearing or wheel bearing, depends on what your car is and has, as you didnt state what you drive..
It's a civic, EH. Thanks for the advice, one more question... If I change the wheel bearing, I know it's pressed in. I was wondering if there was any way to change it with a slide hammer, of a bearing puller? I don't have a hydraulic press and would like to do it myself, but if I can't well obviously I'll take it to get pressed out
i think the best way would be to take it off ( knunckle) and and have it done . you can do it with out a press but you have to a slide hammer to pull the hub out heat the bearing race so it falls off remove the snap ring heat the knuckle up so the bearing falls out and at the same time have the new bearing in the freezer and the hub (w/o race) in the freezer and try to assemble all this stuff whille all the part stay at different temp. and if any part begains to heat up or cool down you will have trouble just pay to have it done.
