Honda Rumors
Hi. I am not a Honda owner, but I have NOT come here looking for a fight, to flame, or bash on anyone or their cars. I have a friend that drives an '89 crx si. He never stops talking about how hes going to swap this, turbo that and all for cheaper than anything else comparable.
Could the members on this forum either prove or disprove his bold claims with links to a build thread or some hard evidence that shows;
1- a k series swap in a crx that runs 13's and cost around $3,000 (not including the cost of the car)
2- a turbo kit for an s2000 that "smokes" lambos for $4,000
3- any honda that makes 300whp and still can get 30+mpg (this is my favorite crazy statement made by my friend)
I am open minded and would like to be taught a thing or two about the honda world. Fire away.

hes a dork lol, well k swaps are damn expensive you can get them kinda cheap depending on whos selling them i seen one on craigslist for like 1500 but engine mounts, wiring, tuning, all that from what i read it gets pricey.. im not saying im correct either. but it does get expensive. im not sure about s2000 smokin lambos lol, im sure its possible but more than 4Gz.
One of the many reasons I have trouble believing his claims... haha. I figured it would be at least $3,000 in parts alone with the engine, trans, ecu, etc. Plus he would be having a shop do all the work for him so I can basically disregard that one? Can a k20 crx at least pull a 13 second pass if done correctly?

youtube s2000 from hell. he could probably hang or over take lambos. seeing that it was a shop car lots of things were probably fabbed up and do by myself. so that would save money. i honestly dont know how much was put into the car but the enigine itself is stock except for the turbo kit and tune. i mean theres a youtube video of a crx beating a lambo with a swap and spray. and i have a fully built N/A b16b in a del sol that is stroked and i make 327 and i get about roughly 27mgp on 93 driving it normal on a nice 70degree day. and i am in the 13sec range in a del sol sol. so it is possable a crx would be with a k swap and you can get a kswap for pretty cheap from lkq but then you have mounts and wiring and all that stuff. if he did the wiring and **** yourself its would be close but idk for under 3k might just be a lil over but thats buying everything used and doing alot on your own. light car is a fast car. seeing that a kswap comes with 200+ with a lightweight gutted car it would be a for sure 13sec.

-I've seen the s2k from hell, and that is not a $4,000 venture right there... haha. And probably hang... is not "smoke".
-Buddy is mechanically challenged and won't be doing the work on his own. If anything, I would be doing more work than he would.
-I don't know you or the amount of time, effort and cash put in to your car. But without some kind of proof I really have a hard time believing the 300whp and 30mpg claim. Maybe a dyno slip and some gas receipts? hahaha.
end of the day a b16 built or not is still a four banger iv seen built motors get that kind of mpg
i think its funny you joined honda-tech to try and prove your friend wrong

Lot to process there...

i like cars period. my real love is hondas and rat rods and lowriders. ive almost gotten both a tsi and a 240 but after driving both of them numberous times cuz my friends have had them, i decided the only way id enjoy the tsi was as a winter car. and the 240 would be fun as a drift car. other then that i like hondas but im not out to be the fastest either. i did want ive done to my car to better it and give me something to do. in the end this is probably the last car i will build. after this its the stock road for me. unless a ae86 comes around or a 60s caddy. hhaha.
Thanks for being honest about it. I know the feeling of dumping ungodly amounts of cash into a car and cutting out other unnecessary parts of life like food haha. It's just that my friend doesn't understand how difficult it really would be to create that kind of horsepower without requiring more fuel in the combustion.
Does anyone know how I could break it down to him in "Honda Speak"? haha. Maybe if I throw in a couple vtec references he would understand me better...

its just fun beating a dsm, nissan, etc. that is meant for speed, with a grocery getter like a 1990 hatch or a fuel efficient crx hf with a big power engine with extensive work that will cost 4k+....as for 300Whp and 30 mpg....it maybe can be done with crazy tuning . but havnt seen that yet

BUT. but i already had alot of the swap stuff like mounts and linkage. i saved alot of money by doing things myself. but theres things you cant do yourself unless you know what you are doing i didnt know or have the tools to port my head and bore my block so i had to send that out which is why it cost the most. as for the oem ctr block i bought of craigslist for 300 bucks used the oem ctr head i got from a friend and traded some parts for. so you can build a honda with good amounts of power with name brand parts if you know how to budget shop. i mean i looked and looked for parts till i found a deal. even if it took months or weeks.
maybe your buddy will understand that my set up wouldnt have made near what it did but it takes costly lil details and things people dont quiet think about lil i also have no heat and ac or powersteering. injectors and such i already had from years of previous builds. it takes alot of time the more you own or build car wise the easier it is cuz you get to collect up a bunch of parts like i have done with out that it would be way more then ive already spent.
but what i did to save the guess work/money was find a set up that i knew had numbers i liked and went with something similar and tried to better it. cuz i already knew what it made before so me and the tunning guys had a plan on what would make better numbers and what i should do.
Sounds like you're a Honda OG then haha. I'll be sure to inform my buddy that there are a few costs missing from his list. Would you say the 300whp mark was hard to hit? Did it take all the extensive tuning involved, or would the mash up of parts alone do it?
the parts would alone do it. but the tuning makes it reliable and finelines it. i have seen b16s that are not stroked get close to 300whp but they are built built haha. but id say both. cuz i mean you talk with a tuner on what to do to make a certin power mark then their tune can get down to rpms even and fineline it all. but just a tune isnt going to do much. so id say both. i mean neither of you are wrong in anyway except maybe the s2k part idk never owned one. its just what is around or what they have stocked up or friends you have that can hook you up. or the ablity to fab stuff up. like the guys that own shops they can do **** for cheap cuz they can fab what they need to and have stuff laying around which cuts alot of cost. but you said he isnt inclided to that haha.
if i could do it over again i would go with a kswap or a jswap. but i wanted to make my goal out of a b16.

I'm interested in what they did to achieve such power.
in the end yes the kswap would have been cheaper to build. cuz you start off with more hp from the start.
and i believe there was one on the old ht. and one on the other site. but they were full race builds and had custom pistons and real big bores etc. and everything was balanced and no corners were cut and not amount of money was too much. they were not normal joe builds.

And I said on the other thread "I told him to prove it. He said ask the guys on Honda Tech....." That's exactly what I'm doing. If asking a question here gets answered in 5 minutes and saves me the time I don't see why I shouldn't ask it.
An N/A b16 can be built to about ~220-240whp.
u can reach 300 with a turbo. and thats on pump gas. i would imagine that you would retain most of your fuel efficiency. but as most turbo builds go, its upgraded injectors and upgraded fuel pump system. so i'd image 300whp and 30mpg isnt very reachable. maybe with some amazing tuning skills. but idk where that exists.
