Default 1998 Civic Hatch minor or major problem?

Hello,

My oil change shop recently made me aware of two issues they noticed.

TRANSMISSION PAN LEAK
OIL PAN GASKET LEAK

There are small puddles out in our driveway, but I've checked the levels for everything, and it all is holding right where it should be.

In your opinion, is this a minor or major problem?

How difficult would it be to fix these issues?

The car has original 79k miles on it, and drives flawlessly, from my perspective.

Gas mileage has been in the mid 30s, and there is no evidence of oil burn.

If it was you, would you fix it or just worry about it later?

Thoughts?

Thanks for your help and guidance over the years!

If it didn't come from the factory like that then fix it.

Would this job include:

DRAIN OIL
REMOVE LOWER HALF EXHAUST MANIFOLD
REMOVE DRIVEPLATE/FLYWHEEL COVER

I pulled these off of the acura page, but I want to be sure before I do it myself.

Thanks

Check it over very well before you replace anything. Oil leaks are frequently misdiagnosed. I'm curious about this transmission pan leak as well, Honda automatic transmissions don't have a pan.

anything leaking is clearly not normal. Oil leaks can be a mystery....keep monitoring it and I am pretty sure you can narrow it down. Trying cleaning the spot you see it leaking from and then checking it the next day, might help you a little.

It's true, there is no oil pan on that model civic.

The only real places for leaks to be are...

- engine oil pan...not too hard to fix
- axle seals- not hard, but must remove axles to do so
- rear main seal, big job...it means pulling the tranny to replace a $14 seal

Default How difficult?

Alright Civic jockeys,

The leak is coming from the oil pan gasket.

How hard is it to change it out?

Are there any directions or steps out there on this site?

I had the oil changed about a month ago, and the oil is barely below the top hole on the dipstick, so it isn't leaking that bad.

I want to fix it on my own, if I can, but would like to gather more info before I make the decision to pay to have it done or do it myself.

Can you help?

thanks

My tranny is leaking too (the one on the car)... I just keep an eye on it. Allegedly the case has a small crack. It should get fixed, but the fluid level hasn't visibly receded, so it waits a little. Not a fun job.

link to manual: http://www.amyemayfield.com/loren/Ho...udes_B16A2.pdf

The oil pan doesn't look too involved to me, no crossmembers in the way or anything... But then again I've never taken mine off. Maybe you can get some decent info from the link I posted to the manual?
