i'm sure curious if there are any specific things i should look for in pictures when buying a used turbo to indicate any damage. i know to look for damaged fins, fin to housing contact, etc, but are there any other subtle signs of a heavily used/damaged turbo?

No, I would never buy a used turbo without seeing it in person first. Only way I'd buy a turbo without seeing it in person is if it was new.
