rhd converson in California questions
i wanna convert my ef to rhd i had a few questions i wanted to know what is needed to be done so it can be legal and so i wont have problems with police and also were to get it from? and install? any help thanks
Don't do it!!! Think about this for a second, it will always be a conversion and in two years when the rhd EF's become legal in all states, what are people going to want, a conversion or the real thing?
25 year mark=conversions for junkyard

He's saying that in a few years, the 25 year rule for these cars will be in effect which allows vehicles with a production date of 25 years or older to be imported and registered as historic vehicles in the United States...
These laws exist in north america, has to do with international trade agreements in most cases. In Canada at the federal level we have a 15 year rule, some provinces have gone as far as making inquests into it and establishing their own laws in the motor vehicle act, the province of quebec no longer allows the 15 year rule but has now set it at 25.
These laws have positive and negative effects. It's nice at first, but once governements and insurance corporations see a massive influx of rhd drive cars, they start to put the brakes on, so to speak... It's happened here in Canada, where it's still not necessarily easy or convenient to import or own rhd cars. I have one, it's paid for, and I'm restoring it, but I have no idea what the future holds as far as the legality of it a few years down the road.
As far as conversions and rhd cars in California like the op is asking, it's been done, but it apparently all seems illegal. If you really want rhd over there, wait to import one once it conforms to the 25 year rule but do it quick before they try to make ammendments to the laws, this way you'll be legal.

Yeah the 25 year old law has been around forever. Since I am Canadain I almost imported a r32 skyline to Canada and would register is in Canada, with a Canada drivers License and Insurance. Then bring it down here as I am a student. Just drive it up once every two years to get it inspected. Once it turned 25 years old one last trip across the border and get a USA title. However talked to a guy in Japan. There are no efs left. The few that are still over there are all race cars. He says you never see them on the street.
No problem
Here in Canada, the cars that are most in demand are the ones that just became eligible. Older imported cars typically 89-93 are already here and on the used market which is pretty big, they're already here, if someone wants one they don't necessarily need to import one themselves. Right now what's being brought in is 96 model year cars, EK4, DC2 Type R... As well as Nissan R33, S14, Toyota, Mitsu etc etc... whatever wasn't available pre-'96.
LOL what makes you think that the JDM EF's will be coming from japan? Most are located in the close countries around them. The jdm emissions are so strict that the majority of older japanese cars were exported to other countries and have been for a long time.

To the OP...do not waste your time with such a plan. Besides spending a ton of money and wondering if hacking up the front end and reassembly will hold up in an accident, it's simply not worth it.
Where i live in Canada, right hand drive cars are worth "less" than left hand drive. No one would ever waste their time doing a conversion. If you are going to be able to import soon, then wait if you want one so bad.
I picked up a 93 Del Sol last month with only 70 thousand miles for $1400. These cars are dirt cheap here

I had a converted rhd crx. Loved it. But one day some cops pulled me over and illegaly searched my car and found that the vin on the firewall is different then on the dash. They stopped registration on it and i had to sell it out of state.
Everyone. It IS legal to do a RHD Conversion on a CRX as I did one and also have, legally, new state appointed VINS on my car with a B16A1 motor as my new engine.
Here is what you do. Take your LHD Car to the CHP State Patrol Etc...Tell them of what you want to do and that it entails firewall swap etc. Make sure you get clearance from them (should be no issue, and make sure to take that persons name) and get all the parts from a reputable company (hmotorsonline) Make sure to keep all your receipts, take photos of the job, DO NOT cut out the VIN from the RHD firewall and re-weld your USDM...big NO NO. Do not remove the VIN from the LHD Dash board and install it on the RHD Dash. Once the work is complete and you are all reassembled, make an appointment with the CHP State Patrol, tell them you previously went in to talk to them and now are done with the work. Take all your documentation and have them do their thing. They will approve your car and re Assign new numbers to your car and way you go.
Had mine done recently and am 100% State Patrol Certified and legal.

I hope you guys know the 25 year thing is a bust. Its not like that anymore. All 1975 and older cars are exempt and that's it. They actually want to move it back to 1969. I got the info from my 2011 smog update course. If you think about it, 1985 and older should be legal now, so where are they? The AE86 corolla should be legal, s12 silvia but its still impossible to get one.
Oopsie. I just checked my notes and I got confused. Its still 25 for NHTSA and 21 for EPA. Its the smog test they(CARB) might be changing to 1969. Sorry guys. You can keep your dreams alive.
^^^ thats what i thought, so illegal or legal whats the best way to go about all this? my plan to drive my rhd for the past 5 years was to buy those little blue vin tags and start paper work on them, use the red month passes untill it becomes a gross polluter and then get a new blue vin and do it again.
