Default Trouble with the fuel filter? read this

Okay, so I had a hell of a time getting my fuel filter detached from the fuel lines. I just got my first CRX (1991, HF) a couple of months ago, so I've been learning a lot ever since. Safety first: remove the battery cable. Sparks+fuel=no more Honda.

First, the bolts are not reverse-threaded, and this can be done, with a lot of elbow grease, and a good breaker bar or two. So, take the first big step and get the filter off of your firewall by removing the two small bolts attached to the bracket, and then loosening the bolt on the right side of it . This might seem backwards, but you need to get maximum leverage and have direct control of the filter.

Before you get the big bolts off you'll want to remove the pressure bolt on top and remove your gas cap so that you don't have a geiser of gasoline in your face.

If you've got an impact wrench you can probably skip this next step. If not, then what might work best is two pairs of vice grips and two breaker bars. If you don't have a breaker bar then grab your two biggest open-end wrenches. You can use these for leverage if you angle them right. I don't have any pics, so you'll have to figure it out on your own, but you'll get it; just remember to use the closed end.

So, once you've got your filter in a reasonable location place one pair of grips on whichever bolt you would like to get off first, but remember, you'll want it attached to the bolt, and pointing to your left.

Next, take the other pair of grips and place them at the base of the 'teeth' that hold the line in place. I wouldn't suggest placing them on the nut below that because you might not have enough room. Make sure these ones are pointing to your right...ish.

NOTE: Make sure your vice grips are VERY tight, or they'll almost definitely slip off if you get the wrong angle. If you have to use both hands to secure them then so be it.

At this point your grips should be almost 180 degrees off, so when you apply force your arms should make you look like your in a body building competition. Now place one breaker bar/wrench on the circular part of each pair of grips. Now apply force inward

That illustration probably didn't help, but it was worth a shot. Okay, if all has gone well then you should have spilled some fuel and now you need to place your lines above something...like if you were bleeding to death.

Okay, now just work backwards. Don't forget the placement of your washers. You'll have to torque the crap out of the bolts so that they don't leak when pressure is applied. Even still, you might have to go ahead and start the car, give it a run, and give it some more torque to finish her off. Try to use the same placement with the vice grips, only in the exact-opposite locations. And don't forget the top pressure bolt. Then put the filter baack into the bracket, tighten the side bolt, and put the whole assembly back against the firewall.

I hope this has helped any new CRX owners/filter replacers. If I missed something, please feel free to post and spread the wealth. See ya on the boards!
