Reasonably Priced Brand of Oil for 2004 RSX?
I do not drive my car hard at all and do not want to spend $50 on oil alone.
This is the first oil change since I bought the car and I want to get into a habit of using *decent* oil.
Factors might include that I live in MI. and experience 4 seasons, not sure how much that factors in. Not a Type-S.
Should I just got with the rated 5w20 all year round? If so whats a decently priced brand for my easy driving? I also do not put a lot of miles on the vehicle and right now its only got 71k on the engine.
Thanks.

I use Amsoil OE and get it from a local distributor for about $4 a quart.
Also, Amsoil claims service life for there regular $10 per quart oil to be 1 year/25,000 miles under normal conditions.

Because Honda stopped using it themselves! They started noticing grinding threw the cams and decided to send a letter to all owners to not use 5w20 in all Kseries engines and to use 5w30 instead...
Search it you will find it...

I searched and see you mention it in another thread - then someone asking for proof and no reply.
I have searched the internets also and see mixed reviews, with most saying to use the rated 5w20 although they are a couple years old.
Do you have an official link showing this to be true?

Yes its a proven fact that 5w20 does cause cam lobe galling on k20a3. Mostly all dealership stopped using the 5w20 because it was costing them to much and then Honda put a stop to it by specifying that all Kseries use 5w30.
Read this link... there is good info in there plus a pic of what happens when using 5w20...

At the end of the day its your choice... I honestly couldn't care what you choose to do but like I always say I did tell you so!

some decent info in this thread: http://www.jk-forum.com/archive/index.php/t-11756.html
regarding clearances and whatnot in relation to using a thinner oil.
regarding clearances and whatnot in relation to using a thinner oil.
Stock allowed rod to crank bearing clearance:
K20A3 (Base RSX engine) 0.0008-0.0020 inch
K20A2 (RSX type S) 0.0013 - 0.0024 inch
Max service limit:
K20A3 (Base RSX engine) 0.0024 inch
K20A2 (RSX type S) 0.0028 inch
The original specs overlap, but as a whole it does look like the type s engine allows for thicker oil. This is an interesting case since the engine are very very similar. But the truth is we still don't know if it is the chicken or the egg. Did the clearances require the oil, or the oil require the clearances?
Either way it looks like using the recommended oil is a safe bet, and it is not only based on fuel economy.

We have to agree to disagree! That is how a great database is formed!
I have no reason to delete your post unless it was a personal attack... which I know isn't the case bud!

Ive used 5w-30 Castrol Syntec in my A3 for about 40k now (since I bought the car) and the engine runs great. No oil consumption, cam galling, or material in the oil sump (I have magnetic drain plugs).
After lots of searching and reading I am well convinced that people with seeming intelligence in the inner working of their engines are using 5w30 so I will make the move towards using it myself.
Nobody says anything against it, and definitely have pro arguments towards it - and whether or not the claims are true people seem to believe they are and some even claim proof by working in garages and noticing that while even people using 5w30 have the galling issue, far more using 5w20 seem to have it.
I appreciate you guys entertaining the thread and just hope the first 70k that were put on my car havent done any significant damage.

ended up grabbing some mobile 1 full synthetic for $24.50 a gallon at walmart. Maybe on my next change I will look into some of the more expensive synthetics.
Thanks for all the info
Thanks for all the info

well thats good usually it cost $28 plus tax in autozone
Is there any chance the cam issues are related to most of the oil companies removing the zinc additives from the engine oil? I know this is a hot topic with all the older V8 stuff. They have issues with the zinc and have to run special additives for their flat tappet engines. I am sure Honda is WAY ahead of that stuff but it was just a thought.
I'm using Eneos 5W20 full syn. I get it from my work for like 5 bucks a quart so it is cheaper than all the other brands and seems to burn off less than Mobil One did.
