Dashboard Lighting Problems
Hi guys,
New to the forums. Doing a lot of DYI fixes on my 1998 4-door LX accord. Currently replacing the front brake pads. Just replaced the drivers side white reverse light. I'm going to have a shop take out those stupid screws honda decided to use on their rotors so I can replace them as well. I'll have the shop replace the brake shoes on the rear drums because I don't want to mess with the springs.
Now I am moving onto the interior lighting. First is the dash. The odometer is dead, as well as the dashboard digital clock. One day when I was driving home and I was in a bad mood, I hit the dashboard pretty hard and presto, they flickered on! That leads me to believe there is a loose wire back there, maybe a result of when I changed the radio head unit? I'd like to know what to look for if I open up the dash again. Also, the lights for the bottom row of the AC are now dead, and the hot/cold dial is dim, and the fuel level gauge on the panel cluster is also dim. The lights for the gear selection, D4/D3/D2/D1/R/N/P is also dead. The overhead console with the pilot/copilot cabin lights and sunglasses holder buttons broke, and the glasses holder springs open violently for some reason, so I may replace the whole assembly.
If you guys could help me out with links to these fixes (which I will be googling in the meantime as well), but most importantly if you could help figure out whats going on with the odometer/clock lighting, I'd be grateful.
Thanks!

I had a similar issue with my cluster on my 96 accord. When you take out the cluster, there are small light bulbs that can be replaced. They are pretty small. As for your speedo malfunction, you could have it repaired, but could be expensive. You are better off replacing the cluster. Try getting a repair manual for the climate control. Good luck.
Got that to work, thanks. I'm going to the dealership to buy some bulbs tomorrow morning. The ones I got from Advanced Autoparts were the wrong voltage.
However, I still have the problem of why the Odometer and Digital Clock wont light up. These are on the same circuit, and I need to find and identify their wiring because a connection is loose. They BOTH blinked back on simultaneously (therefore bulbs are NOT burned out on either one of them) when I hit the dashboard. Something is loose somewhere on that circuit.....

Hopefully you'll be able to save your speedometer by replacing the circuit board. After I replaced my unit, I was considering swapping the circuit boards. I decided just to use the replacement unit. The lights did go dim a few times as you mentioned before. I smacked the dash a few times and it lit up again. It is all good now. Good luck and post what the dealer finds out.
Turns out the blubs were burned on the back of the ODO. I swaped it with a good one for the heck of it and it lit up! I think all the bulbs are burned, clock included.
Anyone know where I can get the backlights for the clock, and also for the climate control unit?
