96 ACCORD POPPING EXHAUST WHILE CRANKING
Hi,
96 Accord LX 4cyl, manual tran. Never has a problem starting from cold but if I go back to the car 10-30 minutes after shutting it off, it cranks, but won't start. While cranking, it now makes a soft popping sound out of the exhaust and occasionally slightly hesitates during cranking but wont start. Battery, plugs, wires are fine. Garage has checked fuel flow and told me timing was OK....they can't solve it. What's strange is when I wait an hour so that engine is completely cold, it starts again....no problem. After driving for a while then shutting the engine off, it will start again straight away. It's only after a 10 to 30 minute cool down that it wont start. Any ideas please. Thanks.

Hi ttcheung97,
I had a number of things done that eventually fixed the problem. (just a few days ago) The first was to make sure there was sufficient fuel flow from the fuel pump. Then, I took the EGR Valve off, cleaned any carbon deposits including the ports under the fuel rail......BUT, the 3 items that finally cleared up the problem were, new spark plug ignition wires, rotor and distributor cap.
Apparently the spark was very weak, so I would definitely start with that first.
Hope it helps you.
(the first mechanic thought my wires were OK, but he never solved the problem, the 2nd mechanic
thought they might be part of the reason for the weak spark, so they were replaced)
