Default Base Timing: Dist @ full advance for 16* BTDC... Causes?

Vehicle: 94 Civic LX w/ D16Z6 & P28(CROME)

What is this typically a sign of? Worn camshaft? Worn dist. shaft? Timing belt off 1 tooth?

Back-story: Got bored after work today, and decided to check the base timing on my DD 4dr... Car has always seemed just a bit sluggish to me(even for a 4dr car w/ 1.6 engine). jumped service connector, loosened dist bolts. Timing was previously set @ 8*... adjusted to full advance to achieve 16*.

Now free-revs much better and has quite a bit more power overall, just a bit worried as to why I had to turn all the way to full advance to get 16*. Motor was rebuilt by a less-than-reliable local shop(right before I purchased it), and ive never bothered to pop off the timing cover.

You have the wrong distributor. On an OBD1 SOHC VTEC engine, you HAVE to use an OBD1 SOHC VTEC distributor. D16Z6, D15Z1, ZC, or JDM D15B.

The non VTEC will bolt right up but it creates the issue you describe. Look at the side of the mount for the dizzy for the code and compare it to a shopping site that sells them.

Check your mechanical timing.

d16z6 mechanical timing is set at different positions and sounds like its off which will bring your timing back to were it has to be instead of fully advanced
