Default Oily Connection

Hey guys,

So I'm still hunting an oil consumption problem on my rebuilt h22. The other day I noticed a connection at the bottom of the head on the passenger side that there was a connection of some sort soaked in oil. Keep in mind that when the motor was rebuilt (~5k ago), the entire engine was hot tanked so this is relatively fresh leak. Here's a pic:

Any one have an idea of what this is?

That's a coolant temp sensor. Pretty odd that it's covered in oil without any oil trail on the side of the head. You're sure it wasn't already oil before installation? Clean it off and see if it returns.

How much oil consumption are you experiencing? You can only leak so much at a high rate.

Looks like the Dist seal is leaking. Look at the bolt directly under the distributor, you can see oil on it.

Thanks for the responses guys, much appreciated.

Looking more closely, I realized that there's a trail running up the vc and underneath the spark plug cover. Upon removing it I noticed that all 4 spark plug cylinders had oil around them. I'm thinking this is the cause of the leak(s).

Are the washers that you use when installing spark plugs actually crush washers? If so, that's definitely the problem as these have been reused.

The actual spark plug metal washers shouldn't make any difference, I would check your valve cover gaskets.

Check or replace the valve cover gasket as well as the spark plug hole gaskets.
