Default tranny swap easy both ways?

Ok so I have automatic 98 lx and friend at work has 96 lx manual, he wants auto and I want manual, I've seen the tread auto to manual but is it just as easy to go the other way? With both cars side by side how long should this swap take,(all of experienced mechs), do we have to pull motor or no? Or do we just swap everything like it is and everything should bolt up?

swapping cars would be easier.
take into account switching of axles ( same for man tranny?) and radiators, i think other than that it shouldnt be much more work. It def. is more work since your doing a conversion on 2 cars instead of just removing and installing on 2 cars.
Dont have to pull the motor....just get it stabilized with a support bar ( dont know the real name of that tool lol) and your good. Drop it from the bottom. and if your following the auto to mani guide then you will be fine, the man to auto is all bolt up.

Auto to manual is simple. Manual to auto is not easy at all and is best not done.

Because you have to pull the dash, the heatercore, A/C and anything else under the dash so you can swap the underdash harness, the dash harness, and the engine harness for an automatic. You can easily mod an automatic harness to work with a manual, you just have to screw around with the starting circuit and backup lights, going the other way you have to swap harnesses.

EDIT: psych!

my stand on these swaps in general though.. more often it's better/easier to just sell the car you have and buy one with the transmission you want. these are mass market cars and there are tens of thousands out there to chose from.

It's the same chassis, same engine etc. '96 - '98 Civics are the same.

I agree with this when wanting to swap in an automatic. It is however begining to get hard to find clean 5 speed civics, and it's so simple to convert them that it's worth it.

Op, I wouldn't do this, trade cars with the guy or find another donor car for yourself.
