Default My new 98 5spd CRV EX AWD

Hi all,

New to Honda ownership. Retiring from my time as a long time audi owner... I think I've had enough "German engineering" for a while after 3 used audi's and a GTI.

So, I picked up this CRV in great physical shape, but in need of some TLC. Did a tune up, brakes, ball joints, sway bar bushings, etc. over the weekend and now it's running really well. There are a couple of things I haven't been able to figure out.

1) Temperature gauge is funny. Seems to go all the way cold when going downhill or coming to a stop, stays at normal temp area when driving straight or uphill for the most part. Heat is OK. Coolant is OK. No signs of head gasket leaking thankfully (no signs of mixing oil and coolant, no missing coolant, dipstick is clean, under oil cap is clean, no smoke from exhaust).

2)When rear wheels kick and spin in the ice/snow, there is a sort of howling sound coming from the back pass side wheel area (i think)

3) ABS light is intermittent, and when it's off, ABS pump often cycles when coming to a stop. Front brakes brand new as of yesterday. I've read about rear wheel speed sensors, is this a good place to start? I'm not sure how to diagnose the ABS light short of going to the stealership which I really don't want to do.

4)and the small one... Rear wiper does not work although fuse and wiring looks ok. Rear washer does work.

Thanks guys, I look forward to being part of the forum.

welcome!

let me see if i can pick apart everything on your list.

1) your temperature gauge issue is probably one if not 2 of these , coolant temperature sensor, or a thermostat. replace both at the same time. theyre cheap and in the same spot!

2) your differential noise is infact your diff. you need to replace your diff fluid ASAP. the longer you wait the worse off youre gonna be.

3) i really have no idea on this one, check all your sensors. ,ake sure the axles havent been replaced, if they have been make sure that all the sensor rings and in tact.

4) the problem most likley is your switch on your column, you can replace it or t ake it apart and clean up the connections.

good luck

Thanks for your help. I just ordered 2 qts of Honda dual pump 2 fluid... 1.1 quarts is all it takes? sounds small, but I won't argue because I'm happy I don't need 6 quarts of the stuff. I suppose I'll try not to make the rear wheels kick in until the change, although we did just get a huge snowstorm here in CNY unfortunately. Does this diff contain all of the fluid for the entire "dual pump" system or is this a separate project to tackle.

I'm going to see if I can clean those wheel sensors while I'm under there for the fluid this week and I'm going to go ahead and replace coolant temp sensor and T-stat since both are cheap. I appreciate the input... sounds like you could have saved me some $$ if I let that diff noise go on for too long.

After you put the 1st quart in, check the level. I bought 2, and when i tried to put the .1 in, it came pouring out, and since its expensive, try to save the second quart for next time. if you can feel the fluid with your pinkie after just one quart you should be fine.
Not to nitpick, but if you are trying to fix these on the cheap, i would start with the temp sensor connections, then the sensor if necessary. Doesn't sound like a thermostat problem, but go for it if you like.
The rear wiper might be the motor itself. Disconnect the motor and test the (+)hot wire of the harness with a test light when you turn it on.
Here's the best advice I can give you on the ABS thing. Its a big deal, and since you are relatively new to Hondas and don't want to start off with a bad experience. I would take it to a Honda Dealer for their FREE inspection. Yes, free. When I was selling my S2000 I took it to the dealer with the buyer and they did a 20 something point inspection all the down to pulling the wheels off and measuring pads and rotors for wear. It was a dedicated Service Center though, so you might not be able to take it to any dealer. Good luck and get back with the results!
