Default Grinding by the starter

I have a 2003 honda civic that we turned on from a cold start and heard a grinding whirring sound coming from over by the starter area. Once the car heated up it stopped. Today while the engine was warm and been on for some time it started again, its only when the engine is idle and the clutch is disengaged ANY IDEAS????? We swapped the starter out about 6 months ago didnt have any issues at all

your muffler is loose. Perhaps a bolt fell off.

try to shake the muffler and see if it easily hits something.

@ The three previous replies: If it were the heat shield, the sound would still be there regardless of whether or not he had the clutch engaged.

@ Travis: How loud is the noise? Does it go away when you rev up the engine?

Since it varies with your foot on or off the clutch pedal, I'd start looking at the clutch components. (primarily the release a.k.a. throwout bearing) It could also be the mainshaft bearing, or one of a variety or other bearings. Does the transmission make any noise while you're accelerating, especially in gears 1, 2, or 3?

If it isn't external (starter, etc) then it has to be an internal issue. Whatever the case may be, you're going to need to roll up your sleeves and get dirty.

Good luck with it.
