question about eng swap and smog regulations.
if i were to get a 96 hb and drop a b16a in it. would it pass smog?
my dad told me that it wont because the ID number on the eng and car wont match. and that every two years you have to go to a SMOG ONLY STATION and get it checked there.

I am about to do the same thing with my 91 hatch.
It CAN be done. you might need to see a ref and get a sticker with all the info on it.. let me get some more info for you from someone that has done it....

Spoke w/ a ref and no it won't pass UNLESS the engine is in the same family of the car (which it is because the del sol consists of a b16) so the only way is that the wiring harness, ecu, all smog related sensors, etc. being used is from a usdm del sol. Which means the JDM ecu etc. cannot be used. Double check on it, but that's what the ref I spoke with yesterday told me. hth.
Very basically:
The engine has to be from the same family (Honda/Acura)
The engine and smog equipment must be of the same year, or newer than the chasis of the car.
You will have to have your first smog done by a state ref, and you get a neat little sticker showing that the engine transplant is legal, and SMOG approved.

so if i get a 96 hb and a 96+ b18c. i would be fine if all the parts are usdm? and the smog equipment would be from a 96+ hb in order for me to pass?

I was under the impression that the engine it's self didn't have to be USDM just the emission controll stuff, so your exhaust has to be up to US spec
my dad said something about the ENGINE ID and CAR ID wont match, and it wont pass smog. can you tell me more about this.
smog laws says that you have to drop in a motor newer or same year as your car. when you swap your motor you dont need to go to referee to get smogged you can go to any smog station. You only go to referee to get a Bar approved sticker saying that you are smog legal.
