Default timing question (rather involved)

When i put my base timing on my fully built y8 @ 8 degrees base timing, it hesitates @ the vtec crossover quite noticably, especially in 3rd gear, BUT, if i put the timing @ 10, it does not hesitate- it's perfect. The reason I'm trying to run less timing is to lessen the possibility of cracking ring lands again... One thing I have kept in mind is the program I'm running (IT'S A G-FORCE Y7 ECU from my JUICED Y7 build) takes 2 degrees out after 4k from the stock timing curve, my rpm switch activates vtec @ 5200. The P2e (y7) ecu has pretty conservative timing maps so I'm thinking that the 8 degrees is making the overall timing way too retarded
