BAR'ing GSR in CRX
Hey so I will be looking to BAR my swap very soon. Any and all help is appreciated.
The Car:
89' civic with 94' b18. I have a 94 virgin ecu ready to go. Car is converted all to OBD1 already & runs with no CEL.
I had this same swap BAR'd before as OBD2 so I am familar with BAR'ing an OBD2 swap.
My Questions:
I have an 98 throttle body, does anyone know if the OBD2 vs OBD1 throttle body is the same?
CAT? I don't have a stock cat anymore so I am assuming I need either a stock OBD1 cat or one of these new California legal cats?
EVAP routing? I am lost as to how the EVAP is suppose to work. I hooked it up the way I thought it should go and its pulling vaccum all the time if you hook it up the way I did with OBD2. so i just pluged the line for now until I figure out how its suppose to go.
Intake? Others are saying use a LS intake boot with the stock intake box? Is this correct?

u need to have all the stock gsr **** my homie went with a ls intake tube and they failed him id get everything the right way and just go once bruh
hmm yeah I was able to smog my EK with the same swap with an EX intake arm on the stock EX intake box. He actually said he let that slide since I was getting it REFed by choice I think.
why can't I smog it as a 95? Last time I got my BAR done the ref looked up the year of the computer and went off of that. I got a 95 obd1 p72. lol you kidding me I would never REF it as obd2 that would seriously suck ALOT
You bar the motor not the ecu that's just how the cookie crumbles. If you want to risk being failed for using 95 electronics on a 96 spec motor than that's your choice I wish you luck in that case.

Dude have you ever BAR'd a vehicle before? I don't know for sure about the obd issue but I do know for sure that it doesn't work the same as a regular smog check. You don't get penalized for bringing it in to get a BAR check. Anyhow I am just telling you what I know from having done this before. My motor is a 96. its stamped on the head. but he smoged it as a 98 because when he called the dealer to verify the ecu it was a 98. That's how they do it apparently. I am gonna call them up a see what they say.
I've personally spoken with the ref about baring my ls. So to technically answer your question no but I have gathered info on the matter from the source and not from heresay.
Hmm yeah i don't know this for sure. I will have to ask my local REF. I don't think there is really a state wide standard on alot of this stuff. I think the REF just decides what he will and will not do. I mean my local REF is smogging jdm motors still. I heard the whole jdm thing was a mix up in Sacramento.
From what I've gathered over the phone on the line the state provides where they don't even give you direct info but basically generalize everything. They basically without directly saying it that there ia no written book of laws. The ref as you said ultimately decides what he wants to let go. If you can get away with using obd1 electronics in the 96 motor then more power to you. But that I specifically gathered info that the electronics much match the motor so in that case IF it were me id just take the plunge and use 96 electronics if not get a motor from a 95. Gl let us know what you decide and how it goes.
There are alot of issues with obd2 for me. Main one being I sold the ECU cause I never wanna go back to obd2 ever again
. I would have to wire another O2, buy an overpriced cat, install a ftp sensor, buy another ecu... **** dude I am considering finding a 94 or 95 cylinder head and just swap the head. That would make it a "94" or "95". lol

Run a dremel on the 96 stamp on the block, making it look like it was accidentally chipped off, and tell them you have a 95 motor if you want to go that route. The ref I went to didn't look at the date stamp on the head. I mean, replacement heads for Honda don't always get made in the same year. My ref just asked me what I was trying to BAR and checked to make sure I had the right ECU.
The OBD2 TB is a little different than the OBD1. It is missing a nipple for a vacuum hose to the charcoal canister. He might fail you on that.
Here's a vacuum diagram for OBD1 GSR. Just make sure your Skunk2 IM has similar fittings.

As far as intake, you can just buy an AEM short ram for a GSR, or just use a GSR stock intake, will need to relocate battery.

I am confident about it. I am not even gonna say anything about it. A 96? what motor you refering to? lol. Yeah a hammer and chisel will fix it up nice. But the reason I don't think its gonna be a problem is because the 95 GSR was almost exactly the same except the TB and a few electrical components and the EVAP system.
As long as they made the same motor in obd1 I don't see a problem. Thing is tho if its usdm then they are gonna run the VIN and find out what year from that. Since my motor is jdm they don't check any numbers on the motor.

Actually they check EVAP pretty thoroughly. I had a solenoid from a civic when I did the BAR last time and he failed me on that. You need the correct solenoid for that im pretty sure.
Evap solenoid from 92-95 Civics are the same as the 94-95 GSR. They change the Solenoid on 96 & up or OBD2.
so you bar'd that same motor before ? with that Skunk2 manifold ? i wanna see the results and if you could tell me where did you bar'd the motor as well, last time i checked they said no to Jdm motors( less than 2 months ago )
