Default White box behind tach gauge 91 DA

Over the weekend I swapped in an XSi 9k tach since I'm going LSV and can rev higher. I didn't fully pull out the cluster, I just unhooked the speedo cable and pulled it out a little.

When I looked behind the cluster, all that was holding the stock tach were 5 bolts to the cluster. The XSi tach had a white box snapped into the back of the actual tach but since my stock one didn't I took it off and installed it in there with just the 5 screws.

My motor isn't dropped in yet for me to turn the car on to see if it works but I don't think it'll work since I don't understand how it could get a reading if nothing is connected to it.

Here's a pic of how it 'would' have looked if I would've left the white box snapped in. I have some extra green connectors behind the cluster that weren't plugged in or maybe I yanked them out when I pulled the cluster but if I didn't have that white box anyway where would they have been plugged in.

I removed cruise control so if it's that, great, but can someone also explain how the tach gets a reading if it's not hooked up to anything?
