Icon6 *Help* 96 GSR still won't start

Just bought a 96 GSR with 116k miles on it like 2 months a go. Car ran fine when I bought it. I haven't been able to drive it for almost it two weeks now. :-( I was driving and the tach just died. 2 minutes later the car just puttered and stalled out. It wouldn't take a jump. Towed it home and have since changed the spark plugs, alternator, and distributor. Just changed the battery today and the car started but then died after 2 seconds. Will crank but won't start anymore. Maintenance required light flashes 9 times after I try and start it. But no Check Engine lights. Engine is stock except for a CAI. Starting to get frustrated. Any advice??

I smell fuel when I try and start it, so I know it is not a fuel issue.

Are you sure that the dizzy you replaced it with is good? Sounds like a distributor issue to me, but you may want to check the ecu and main relay as well.

There is an oil leak coming from the head gasket, I hope my compression is still good. It should at least start though.

Dizzy has only 2000, miles on it and came out of running car. I'll check the ecu and main relay when I get home from work. Thanks!

Sounds like the igniter as it feeds the tach. I would also check your ecu. Make sure it is good.

Just to add some info...I have literally taken a known good dizzy from one car, and installed it in another car, and had it go bad...I know it seems coincedental, but I have seen it more than once. As stated above, it does sound like an internal distributor issue because of the tach problem that occurred first.

check for spark. if none exists,
test for power at the distributor connector, pin for the ignitor. if you have power at the pin, the distributor is likely defective

I work two full time jobs so I barely have time or daylight to work on my car. Thanks for all your input. I pulled the spark plugs are they are black. They smell of gasoline, doesn't look like oil. Having my friend come by and do a compression test. Borrowing another friend's ECU and dizzy to see if that solves the problem.

The fact that you say you smell fuel reminds me of my car last week, ignitor went bad(according to the autozone check machine) and my timing belt skipped a tooth, check your timing belt to see if its still on the timing marks at tdc (cams lined up and crank mark on oil pump mark) sounds to me as if it skipped a tooth and check your coil and ignitor, no flaming necessary just suggesting.

id check the easy stuff first put new plugs in it and then check to see if battery terminals are tight and put some gas in it just in case gauge broke / then check for spark and i usually disconnect the fuel line and turn key on to see if fuel sprays out for fuel pressure

You need to check for spark. if no spark check the coil on the dizzy. if that good. check the timming belt. thats all you need to do.

You don't have a CAI do you? If so, make sure you don't have water sitting on top of the pistons. Check this before you try starting your car again.
