Default '01 Civic EX Sedan weird noise on deceleration

My friend just bought this car and told me it was making a weird noise. So I take it down the road and did my few tests that I know while driving and the only time it made a noise was when I let off the gas. It was kinda grinding/womp-womp at the same time....any clues as to what this could be?

Again it is a 2001 Civic EX Sedan w/ auto tranny

my car does the same thing and it's a manual. I think it's the clutch...because when i accelerate and or decelerate it grinds...

Where is the sound coming from? Under the front seats? The front of the car? The rear of the car?

Including these minor details would help people give you some ideas of what the causes are.

Driver's side, or passenger's side? Does it sound like it's possibly coming from the transmission?

it sounds like its coming from both...when the weight of the car shifts forward as in decel. or braking it makes the noise...when the weight shifts backwards as in accel. it goes away. every other driving as in left turn, right turn it is fine in all aspects. bumps at various speeds are also noise-free

Does this car have any modifications? Lowered suspension or over-sized wheels?

wheel bearing growling. its kind of whiny on accel, and scratchy on decel.

its the bearings dude.. my 01 civic had the same thing - w/ a whine when accelerating at speeds over 55 mph. Got both front bearings changed - problem solved

check also motor mount. when auto tranny shifts on acceleration or decel, the engine moves alot if the motor mounts are bad. and check the bearing too
