tranny question
so i was wondering how u can tell a 4spd from a 5spd outside a car.
my friend has 3 cable trannys and one is supposedly my 5spd from bout a yr ago and 2 of them are 4 spd. so whats the difference in the codes stamped on the tranny?

no difference in any of the numbers, and you can't tell by just looking at it whether it is 4-speed or 5-speed - try shifting it and see if you can find 5 gears plus reverse - with the transmission positioned like it would be in the car, take a Phillips screwdriver and put it through the hole in the shift rod (where the shift linkage connects) - turn the rod counter clockwise (to the left) and while holding it over to the left, pull out on the rod and it will be in 1st - push the rod all the way in while holding it to the left and it will be in 2nd - without turning the rod, pull it out and it will be in 3rd - push the rod all the way in and it will be in 4th - turn the rod clockwise (to the right) and while holding it over to the right, pull out on the rod and it will be in 5th - if you can't pull it out, you probably don't have 5th - push the rod all the way in while holding it to the right and you should be in reverse
