Which exhuast system for a H22A Civic Hatchback?
Just got my car back from the muffler shop yesturday and it sounds like crap.
I'm using the stock manifold that came with the H22A. The muffler shop cut off the cat-convertor flange and welded on an oval flange. From there, I have 2 1/4" piping all the way back to an axle-back Magnaflow muffler (oval type canister, kind of like the Racing Medallion); no cat-convertor at this time. (This was once a complete Magnaflow exhaust system that I used for my GSR/B16 engine, which sounded awesome.)
The exhaust system right now is missing the front pipe from the Magnaflow system, which has a resornator.
At idle the exhaust note is bearly noticeable. It has a decent low tone to it. When you floor it, you get an annoying "buzzing" sound, almost like a 2-stroke dirt bike. I'm embarrased to show people what's under the hood. It just makes the H22A sound so weak.
Can an exhaust resornator make that much of a difference to the tone of the exhaust system? Or is it just the H22A producing too much exhaust gases, causing the muffler to lose its tone?
What are you guys/gals with an H22A swap using for an exhaust system? Are you getting that same "buzzing" noise as I am? Any recommendations?
This weekend, I'll modify that Magnaflow resornator pipe back onto the Civic, see if that'll make a difference.
Thanks.

my buddy has an h22 in his accord, and he had 2.5" piping all the way back, no cat, no resonator, and sounded HIGH PITCHED as hell, so what we did was go back and have the resonator welded near the collector, and it sounds nice now....i love the "POP" backfiring sound when he shifts into 2nd and 3rd....hope this helps, late...
Installed the resonator for the Magnaflow exhaust system today. The exhuast tone now has less of a "buzzing" sound, but it's still there. I was hoping for a deep low grumble, like it had before with the GSR/B16 engine, but no. The Magnaflow Exhaust System is NOT designed for a H22A, I would highly recommend staying away from it.
Man, this really sucks. I can't emulate the nice exhuast note like that of my '96 Prelude VTEC with the Greddy Power Extreme. With the Magnaflow exhaust system, it sounds as if I still have a single cam engine under the hood.
For now, it'll do. It's time to invest in a new exhaust system. Any recommendations?
